Sad to say that these half ounce coins are out of the reach of most collectors with gold at $1,778.40 per ounce. And the popularity of the coins has slid rapidly south since 2007. The mint needs to execute one of two options about the First Spouse series: Either change the material from 24 karat gold to .999 fine silver to bring prices to a more reasonable level or, discontinue the series altogether at the end of 2012 since they already suspended all denominations for public transactions above the quarter dollar. No longer are halves and dollar coins released for circulation as well as the non-proof quarter dollars out of San Francisco. The mint is loosing money by making pennies and nickels as well. The point of all this? Slash all unprofitable coinage programs from the Federal Budget. That's my view.
