Bob, $70 over spot for a bullion $50 Gold Eagle is within the realm of normal right now. It depends on the coin’s date, current trend of gold, amount of competition in area, etc., but dealers often pay around 2-3% over spot per new $50 Eagle and sell for around 4% over.

OK, I stumbled on this site by accident but I have a timely question. I’m about to buy a few Gold American Eagle $50 coins. Can someone give me an approximate price I should pay for these. The best quote I got was $70 over spot.

It’s the difference between imperfect and perfect. And yes a shiny coin is a shiny coin but if it has a date of 1995 and a W it’s a very rare coin, and supply and demand come into play. There are probably hundreds of thousands of sets with that 1995 W hole and only 30,000 that don’t have the hole. Who wants a set with the hole?

Obviously the difference between a 69 grade and a 70 grade, is the money you receive when you decide to sell. That’s just the way it is.

With the coin and currency set still available from the mint, I wouldn’t see why they would have a very high markup in secondary market right now. Flippers do have a dillema. They won’t know the profit till they are sold out at the mint. As long as flippers stay away, I like the long term prospects. All the flippers really do is increase the supply of coins. Coin grading of modern coins is just a way to suck money away from collectors. What is the difference between a 69 or 70? It is mostly perceptions in my opinion. Most modern proof and uncirculated coins will get one of those two grades. If you want something rare, go for a 68 or lower. 🙂 I see proofs, reverse proofs and burnished coins as being seperate categories, each with it’s own set of collectors. However, I don’t see how proof collectors would say they don’t need a certain proof coin because the mint mark is different. A proof is a proof. In 1995 they had 2 different proof Eagles and one is considered the key and sells for a lot of money. It doesn’t matter what the experts say, it is what collectors say wiith their wallets and purses.

Thanks, Joe. I’ll bookmark this site. I’ve got a couple coins that I’m curious about so maybe this will get me going to finding out what they’re really worth.

Question: if a coin is graded 69 for example, do any of the graders point to or say specifically why it didn’t get graded a 70?
