London to Rio Olympic Games Handover Coins

Last July, more than a week before the Olympics start, The Royal Mint first revealed its commemorative London to Rio Olympic Games handover coins. On Monday, August 13, 2012, the Mint began selling them to the public.

Three of these coins are limited editions and composed of precious metals to proof qualities. The fourth is in cupro-nickel without stated mintages and in brilliant uncirculated quality. (Jump to coin prices and specifications.) All are expected to be very popular with collectors.

Not only do these 2-pound legal tender coins of the UK mark the end of the games in London, they are also the final coins in the Royal Mint’s Olympic 2012 collection. The next host city will be Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"As the final coin in the London 2012 collection, The Royal Mint has struck a £2 coin to commemorate the Handover to Rio, featuring an evocative design by Jonathan Olliffe. These coins certainly make a striking and befitting end to the London 2012 celebrations," the Mint state on its website.

On the reverse of each London to Rio Olympic Games Handover Coin is a design featuring the passing of the Olympic relay baton from one hand to another. Below the representation are the two countries’ flags. Surrounding the central design are the words "LONDON 2012" and "RIO 2016," set against a backdrop of five lines.

Similar to the previous handover coins of 2008, the edges are letter-inscribed with "I CALL UPON THE YOUTH OF THE WORLD."

Due to the higher prices of precious metals these commemorative coins contain, their prices range between £9.99 and £1,195. Four years ago, the previous handover coins went for £6.95, £32.95, and £450.00. The commemoratives are packaged for collectors in appropriate protective boxes, while the standard brilliant uncirculated issue is presented on a colorful folder.

It is believed that international demand, Olympic size enthusiasm, and limited editions ensure the 2-pound commemoratives will retain their collectible status for years to come.
