Gold declined for a third day on Thursday, but gains were made in American Gold Eagle coins for the first time since Monday.

Gold declined for a third session Thursday, pressured by a stronger U.S. dollar and continued investor disappointment over the missing QE3 signal from the Fed’s last meeting.

"Investors remain cautious on indications that the Fed is unlikely to launch additional monetary stimulus until U.S. economic conditions weaken further," Reuters quoted Suki Cooper, precious metals analyst at Barclays Capital.

Gold prices for August delivery declined $10.40, or 0.7%, to $1,565.30 an ounce on the Comex in New York. Gold traded from an intraday low of $1,554.40 to a high of $1,577.90.

In other New York bullion futures:

  • The sole precious metal to rise Thursday was silver, marking a second day of gains. Silver prices for September delivery added 13.8 cents, or 0.5%, to $27.161 an ounce. Silver traded between $26.425 and $27.330.

  • Platinum prices for October delivery settled at $1,412.50 an ounce, falling $19.10 or 1.3%. The metal ranged from $1,405.70 to $1,431.00

  • Palladium prices for September delivery fell $8.15, or 1.4%, to $574.80 an ounce. Prices moved between $572.00 and $582.25.
