Collectors and investors are taking somewhat of a break in buying numismatic and bullion coins from the United States Mint, the latest sales figures from the bureau show.
The range of overall activity for collector products was down just a bit with 23 outperforming their prior weekly sales versus 24 from before and, more telling, demand for the more popular products declined significantly. First, take a look at the U.S. Mint’s top-ten selling numismatic products:

- Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar Proof (+7,237 to 67,313)
- Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Proof (+2,823 to 84,840)
- Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar Uncirculated (+2,613 to 26,739)
- John Tyler Presidential $1 Coin Cover (+2,009 to 28,736)
- 2012 Proof Gold Buffalo (+1,580 to 5,690)
- 2012 Birth Set (+1,503 to 7,173)
- 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set (+1,467 to 95,285)
- Infantry Silver Dollar Defenders of Freedom Set (+1,466 to 44,912)
- 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle (+1,416 to 279,371)
- 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (+1,363 to 76,224)
Now, consider that the five tops sellers above account for unit sales of 16,262. For a perspective in how much sales have slowed, that compares to 37,303 from the top-five performers reported last week and 96,390 from two weeks ago.
A seasonal slower part of the year explains some of the falloff. Even more to the point, there has not been a significant sales driving product issued by the U.S. Mint since the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coins launched on March 5.
Upcoming sales reports should be a bit more interesting. A series of products scheduled for release in April will help lift collectors’ interest. Several new products to look forward to include the first 2012 Presidential dollar, the second 2012 quarter design, and the proof gold and silver 2012 American Eagles.
US Mint Sales: Bullion Coins
As mentioned, U.S. Mint bullion products have been weaker over the last seven days. Silver Eagles did attain a new milestone on Tuesday, topping 10 million in year-to-date sales.
