4
2012 Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coins and Two-Coin Proof Set
Sales of commemorative coins have led other U.S. Mint products

Commemorative coins of the silver dollar variety have been stealing the U.S. Mint sales limelight since the Infantry Soldier products debuted in mid-February.

With the new Star-Spangled Banner coins now thrown into the mix, the landscape turned more silver’ish, according to the latest U.S. Mint sales figures. In a single week, collectors scooped up 102,554 silver dollars from the Mint’s two commemorative programs. A combined 218,468 have now sold. Split out, totals come to 149,062 Infantry Silver Dollars since they were released on February 16, 2012 and 69,406 Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollars since they launched on March 5, 2012.

Highlighting their desirability versus other U.S. Mint numismatic products, commemoratives have ranked first, second and third in the Mint’s best seller list for a fourth straight sales report. The latest stats have them taking the top six spots, plus position ten.

The 2011-W Proof American Gold Buffalo added 572 to 49,374 against 251. Its availability could be down to less than a day with the 2012-W Proof American Gold Buffalo on sale Thursday.

Additionally, all six silver coins which came off suspensions last Tuesday, March 6, enjoyed advancements. The weekly increase for all America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins totaled 1,919 versus their previous combined declination of 50. Last year at this time mint sets, proof sets, silver proof sets, presidential proof sets, and the first of 4 presidential $1 had all been announced and available for ordering as well as a schedule of releases for the year. Which of these have we got this year? None. So much for listening to the customer.

I guess our Deputy Director of the Mint is a champion procrastinator, or unable to plan, or unable to manage, or just plain unable.

Not to worry. Once I get up there in the Captain’s chair, he’ll be selling hot dogs down in the lobby. And I’m going to force him to give out Presidential Dollars for change..!

Looks like the increased mintage limits on 5 oz silver numismatic coins kind of backfired. Sales are down since the limits were raised from 27,000 per to 35,000. Now they’ve taken off all household purchase limits with the latest 5 oz Chickasaw coin.

Yep, you’re right. But I think it also has to do with the subjects. For example, let’s face it, Chickasaw NP is not as well known or appreciated (rightly or wrongly) by most Americans compared to the “biggies” like Grand Canyon or Yellowstone. It’s too bad, but I think as the series progresses, they’re going to have a lot of poor sellers just b/c a lot of the places won’t have much name recognition. Who’s ever heard of Ft. Moultrie outside of this immediate area?
