According to the latest U.S. Mint sales figures, silver products were easily the bureau’s best sellers but it was platinum and gold coins which outperformed their prior weekly gains — the same coins that went up in price this week.
Demand climbed across the board for each of the First Spouse Gold Coins. Their combined weekly sales settled at 236 for a 168% increase over the previous week. In units, the American Gold Buffalo was 99 higher than before at 280. Rounding out gold coins, American Gold Eagles pulled ahead modestly with total weekly sales of 492 versus 403. The one-half ounce 2011-W $25 American Gold Eagle, which sold out Monday, rose 211 against 134 for a new individual total of 8,066.
In the only U.S. Mint platinum product, 2011-W Proof American Platinum Eagle sales are currently at 13,764, which is up 277 compared to 87.
U.S. Mint sales were strongest across silver products (although slower than the previous week). For a second straight report, Infantry Soldier silver dollars led all U.S. Mint numismatic coin sales and each registered solid gains during their first full week of availability — the coins launched February 16. Two of the six silver products suspended for repricing on Friday still managed to make it on the Mint’s best-seller list, shown here:

Overall, 45 products improved over their prior weekly sales as compared to the 41 out-performers noted previously.
US Mint Sales: Bullion Coins
Sales of U.S. Mint bullion coins remain weak when contrasted against the previous month or from the same time a year ago.
On a weekly basis, each of the bullion gold coins improved, with the one-tenth once Gold Eagle showing on the sales board for the first time this month. Silver Eagles sales, however, are down. The following table highlights:

If I were presented a choice between investing in gold bullion coins and platinum bullion coins, I would definitely choose the latter. Current spot price of platinum are slightly less than gold. But historically platinum has been significantly more expensive than gold. In fact I recall a time a while back (1980s) when gold was around $400-$500 per ounce and platinum was more than $1000 per ounce. Thus it seems likely the markets will want to restore the historic price relationship between platinum and gold, and it seems gold can only lose against platinum in the long term.
