Interest picked up for many commemorative coins and the 2011 Proof Set hit a new milestone, the latest sales figures from the United States Mint revealed.
Ordering deadlines are short for the series of gold, silver and clad commemorative coins released by the United States Mint this year. Collectors must place their commemorative orders by Friday, December 16 at 5:00 PM ET, or look to the secondary market for them.
The buying deadline, combined with a mailed U.S. Mint marketing brochure featuring the commemorative coins, has improved their sales — especially for the U.S. Army issues. Of the six coins offered, five registered better week-over-week gains. Conversely, two of the four Medal of Honor commemoratives coins improved. (As a side note, each of the gold commemoratives had their prices cut Wednesday as a result of declining gold prices.)
A robust weekly increase of 22,346 lifted sales of this year’s 2011 Proof Set over 1 million. Their exact total as of Monday was 1,020,572, or just about 79,000 shy of last year’s 2010 Proof Set which is still available but scheduled to go off sale in 16 days (December 30th at 5:00 PM ET). For a fourth consecutive week, the 2011 Proof Set has topped the Mint’s best seller list.

Overall, 33 numismatic products offered by the United States Mint outshined their previous weekly sales versus the 72 out-performers noted in the prior sales account.
