NGC announced it will affix a new label to holders of graded September 11 National Medals.

Grading service company Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) has announced that it has created a special label designed specifically for September 11 National Medals which debuted earlier this summer from the United States Mint.

The two silver September 11 Medals were released on June 20, 2011 in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. and will raise money and awareness for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center. The NGC special presentation label features the obverse image of the medal with the U.S. flag waving in the background.

Collectors can submit their 2011 September 11 National Medals either under NGC’s Modern or Modern Special services for the designation on the holder. The fee for the Modern service is $14 while the Modern Special fee is $17.

"To submit raw (uncertified) September 11 National Medals for grading and encapsulation with NGC’s special label use NGC’s Modern or Modern Special tier service with the instruction 9/11 Label written prominently on the submission form," Numismatic Guaranty Corporation statement describes.

"Use the Modern Special tier service for the Early Releases designation for medals received by NGC during their first 30 days of release. No per invoice submission minimums apply, but medals to be encapsulated with this label MUST be submitted on their own submission form separate from coins or medals receiving other labels."

The designs on the September 11 National Medals include a depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. The obverse has Lady Liberty holding up the Lamp of Remembrance with beacons of light stretching skyward behind her. On the reverse the eagle’s wings are upstretched while its beak is pointed down and cascading water flows in the background.

The United States Mint produces the silver commemoratives at two different facilities, one at West Point with the "W" mint mark and the other at Philadelphia with the "P" mint mark. The designating mint mark is shown on the reverse of each medal. Between their June 20 release through to September 5, the United States Mint has sold a combined total of 157,467. Medals from West Point are proving to be more popular as buyers have snapped up 98,911 from there versus the 58,566 from Philadelphia.

Each version is priced the same at $66.95, plus shipping and handling. The price includes a $10 surcharge which is given to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to support its operations and maintenance after completion.
