Healthier week-over-week increases were realized across nearly 30 United States Mint products, according to the bureau’s latest sales figures. But there was also weakness in many gold coins and almost a dozen issues had their sales totals trimmed.
The uncirculated American Gold Eagle and Eliza Johnson First Spouse Gold Coins moved slow during their first full week of availability. The Gold Eagle advanced 237 to 1,335 and the Eliza Johnson proof and uncirculated options combined for a weekly pick-up of 581 to 2,689. The US Mint reported relative mild sales increases for Proof American Gold Eagles as well.

Weekly US Mint sales trimmings typically happen as a result of customer returns and cancellations. One of the eleven US Mint products that had its sales cut was the proof 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coin. It recently went off sale in preparation for the 2011-dated issue that launched today. 2010 Gold Buffalo sales fell 37 to 49,374.
What may help gold coins going forward are less expensive prices. The US Mint cut their gold coin prices Wednesday in response to lower precious metals costs.
A noticeable area of increased buyer activity surrounded proof sets. Of the ten proof products reported by the US Mint, six registered improved weekly performances. The 2011 Proof Set rose the most, advancing 12,926 versus the previous 11,363.
