US Mint Sales: Glacier Quarters Debut, Collector Products Improve

0

The latest US Mint sales report indicates improved demand for collector products.

Glacier National Park Quarter Bags and Rolls

It also includes the debut figures from the newly released Glacier Quarters, the seventh issue in the America the Beautiful Quarters® series which honors national parks and sites.

The US Mint introduced three Glacier Quarters products last week in the form of a two-roll set and two 100-coin bags. Continuing a trend that began with the series introduction last year, debut bag and roll sales were slower than previous issues.

The following table highlights past quarter opening performances:

*The Mount Hood opening sales figures are suspect given erroneous order cancellations that occurred at the time.

On a related topic, preliminary circulating production figures reveal that combined Denver and Philadelphia minted Glacier quarters rank as the second scarcest in the America the Beautiful Quarters series. The 2011-P Glacier quarter actually ties the 2011-P Gettysburg quarter as the most scarce quarter-dollar by mint facility. The Philadelphia mintages each stand at 30.4 million.

Collectors handed out more money last week for proof and mint sets. As a group, thirteen of seventeen sets enjoyed week-over-week improvements. Weekly sales of the 2011 Mint Set jumped the most, advancing 17,621 against 3,092. They may top 300,000 by week’s end.

Despite its temporary suspension, the 2010-dated America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set rose 2,352 versus 1,372. It and other silver sets have been receiving more attention in recent weeks as buyers compare the sets’ silver melt values to US Mint selling prices. The US Mint last week suspended the sale of two of its silver products after silver prices jumped over $40 an ounce.

The following tables show the latest coin sales figures as reported by the US Mint:
