Gold Jumps 8.1% in April with Record Close, Silver Prices Soar...

Fine Gold BarsPrecious metals advanced as a group on Friday, capping robust weekly and April gains. Gold futures prices closed to a new record and rallied 8.1 percent in April. Silver prices settled to a fresh 31-year high, soaring 28.3 percent during the month. Gains in metals were aided by the U.S. dollar which fell Friday to its weakest level in three years.

June gold prices jumped $25.20, or 1.6 percent, to close at $1,556.40 an ounce on the Comex in New York. Gold futures traded between $1,532.10 and $1,569.80. Gold rallied 3.5 percent this week and 9.5 percent in 2011 [...]

The United States Mint began selling the Hot Springs National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin on Thursday at 12:00 noon Eastern Time for $279.95. Demand was strong, as the US Mint expected and warned.

By 9:00 PM Eastern Time, the Mint had taken in more than 19,000 total orders by phone and web. The collector coin is limited to a total mintage of 27,000. It is the debuting issue in the Mint's America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin series. Each coin in the series features a 5 ounce weight, .999 fine silver purity, a three-inch diameter and a reverse design emblematic of a national park or national site [...]

U.S. gold futures on Thursday advanced over $1,531 an ounce and to a new record for a second straight day. Gold benefited from continued weakness in the U.S. dollar. Silver soared 3.4 percent and closed at a fresh 31-year high. The precious metal at its peak fell 44 cents short of $50 an ounce.

However, gold's recent spike is now showing signs that the yellow metal is no longer acting as a reflection of speculative responses to the presence of liquidity in the global system, but, rather as a "knee-jerk/go-to" asset by dollar sellers.
