Precious metals advanced as a group on Friday, capping robust weekly and April gains. Gold futures prices closed to a new record and rallied 8.1 percent in April. Silver prices settled to a fresh 31-year high, soaring 28.3 percent during the month. Gains in metals were aided by the U.S. dollar which fell Friday to its weakest level in three years.

The United States Mint began selling the Hot Springs National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin on Thursday at 12:00 noon Eastern Time for $279.95. Demand was strong, as the US Mint expected and warned.

By 9:00 PM Eastern Time, the Mint had taken in more than 19,000 total orders by phone and web. The collector coin is limited to a total mintage of 27,000. It is the debuting issue in the Mint's America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin series. Spot metals dealings opened once again with gains this morning, to no one's surprise if they were on dollar-watch at all. Gold was indicated at the $1,537.60 bid level with a gain of $1.80 per ounce.

The unique gold kilo coin, struck at the facility in Llantrisant, South Wales, is one of the official Royal Wedding coins approved by the Royal Household and the Government. U.S. gold futures on Thursday advanced over $1,531 an ounce and to a new record for a second straight day. Gold benefited from continued weakness in the U.S. dollar. Silver soared 3.4 percent and closed at a fresh 31-year high. The precious metal at its peak fell 44 cents short of $50 an ounce.

US dollar-selling swiftly reignited in the wake of yesterday's "no change" Fed statement and the Bernanke press conference and it was the primary driver of the rally that brought gold prices to a fresh record at $1,535 during the evening hours.

However, gold's recent spike is now showing signs that the yellow metal is no longer acting as a reflection of speculative responses to the presence of liquidity in the global system, but, rather as a "knee-jerk/go-to" asset by dollar sellers. In that regard, our friends over at Standard Bank SA opined in their overnight market commentary that we may have come too far, too fast, and that gold broke through the $1,500 level some two months ahead of previous projections, outpacing other metals [...]
