The United States Mint this morning released coin production figures for March, and for the first time this year circulating 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters were struck. Also minted were additional Lincoln cents, Native American Dollars and Presidential $1 Coins.

2010 Jefferson Nickels 0 0 0
2010 Roosevelt Dimes 0 0 0
2010 Quarters 19,000,000 23,400,000 42,400,000
2010 Kennedy Half Dollars 0 0 0
2010 Native American $1 0 8,260,000 8,260,000
2010 Presidential $1s 21,420,000 18,340,000 39,760,000
Total 205,620,000 178,800,000 384,420,000

The U.S. Mint nearly doubled production in March with 384.42 million coins as compared to the February total of 194.40 million. (218.41 were minted in January.)

Aside from the already mentioned quarter additions, other differences between the two months include:

  • Pennies: Monthly numbers jumped 294.0 million versus the previous 162.8 million increase
  • Dimes: None were struck in March when 19.0 million were minted from Philadelphia in February
  • Native American Dollars: For the second straight month, Philadelphia output increased while Denver production remained at zero.
  • Presidential $1s: Nearly 40 million more were struck. None had been minted since January.

The Mint has not broken out production by quarter design, but it is presumed that the 42.4 million numbers shown above will eventually be attributed to a portion of the final mintages for the Hot Springs National Park quarters which will be issued on April 19, 2010. The coin is the first in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which will feature 56 rotating reverse designs between 2010-2021 that honor sites in each state, D.C., and US Territory.

The Mint this year is releasing quarters later than it has in the past. As an example, 2009 first quarterly figures had shown that three different quarter designs had already been produced — DC, Puerto Rico and Guam, and that a total of 399.2 million were minted between January and March. That is nearly ten times the level as compared to how this year has started.

Quarter-dollars to follow in 2010 include the Yellowstone National Park Quarter, the Yosemite National Park Quarter, the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter and the Mount Hood National Forest Quarter.

The Presidential $1 coins produced in March will get assigned to the Franklin Pierce $1s that enter circulation beginning on May 20, 2010. The Mint in February provided the final mintage tally for the Fillmore $1s which are already circulating.

The following is a year-to-date breakout for total coin production by design, as officially available from the US Mint:
