2009 American Gold Eagles Inventory Depleted, Allocation to Begin
The US Mint ran out of one ounce 2009 American Gold Eagle coins last week which caused their temporary suspension, and now the fractional sizes that were just launched are either gone or being allocated following record one-day sales.
The demand for American Eagle coins is straining inventory, forcing the US Mint to send out another notice to its customers:
Due to strong demand, the "American Eagle Gold Tenth-Ounce Coin inventory was depleted. The inventory for the half-ounce and quarter-ounce coins remains very limited," the US Mint stated today in a memorandum to authorized purchasers. "We will offer the remaining half-ounce and quarter-ounce coins for sale via the United States Mint standard allocation process."
The US Mint released the Eagle Gold Bullion Coins in one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce weights on Thursday. On that single day, 345,000 coins were sold for a total of 58,000 ounces of gold. The following two tables list the latest 2008 and 2009 sales figures as provided by the US Mint:

US Mint Offers 2009 Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins
The United States Mint on Thursday issued collector proof an uncirculated 2009 Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins for the respective prices of $754 and $741. The coins are the thirteenth in a series of commemoratives designed to honor former first ladies of the United States.
The coins for Margaret Taylor feature a portrait of her on the obverse (heads side) that was designed by Phebe Hemphill and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers. The reverse (tails side) was designed by Mary Beth Zeitz and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. It features a younger Margaret providing comfort to a wounded soldier while her husband was engaged in the Seminole War.
Each contains 1/2 ounces of 24-karat, .9999 fine gold, includes the "W" mint mark denoting their production at the US Mint facility in West Point, and has a face value of $10.
US Mint Launches 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof
The US Mint today released the 2009 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin at an inaugural issue price of $1,792.
The coins each contain 99.95 percent pure platinum, are limited to a maximum mintage of 8,000 and have a order limit in place of five per household.
The 2009 Platinum Eagle features a new reverse or tails side design emblematic of the principle "To Form a More Perfect Union," the first of six principles of American democracy found in the Preamble to the United States Constitution.
This year's theme depicts the diversity of the nation with four faces on the left looking towards the right, hair and clothing weaved together. The weaving completes a circle where within the concept is inscribed. It was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
