US Mint Sales Figures: 2009 Proof Sets Surge, Pennies Rise

1

US Mint Sales Figures ImageStanding out in the latest batch of US Mint sales figures is an eyebrow raising increase for the 18-coin clad 2009 Proof Set.

After a double-take, the numbers were verified as true. Another 106,987 were purchased during the prior seven days ending on Sunday.

The new total stands at an impressive 684,412 sold in the first 28 days. The increase was the best ever, with the exception of launch week. Why the jump? Look to Mint marketing. Postcards advertising the sets hit collector mailboxes en masse last week, reminding the public to buy. They did.

Demand for the 2009 Lincoln Formative Years cents had softened of late. While nothing to scream home about, sales of the two-roll sets actually climbed a smidgen last week. 8,704 more were purchased, raising the new tally to 276,234. There was a gain of 7,912 during the prior week.

In other sales figures:

  • Braille Silver Dollars are not making massive inroads toward a sellout. 1,978 more were sold, bringing the total to 173,325 of the allotted 400,000.
  • Guam quarter demand was cut by more than half in comparing week-over-week sales. 1000-coin bags from Philadelphia actually declined by 26.
  • UHR’s $20 Double Eagles seemed to have found a new home with weekly increases in the 900 range.
  • First Spouse Gold Coin sales were mixed, but trended a touch higher.
  • Silver coin demand was fluid. Of the six US Mint silver products sold, four increased modestly and two eased lower.
  • Bullion gold and silver eagle sales are on fire. For the first six months of this year, 13,824,500 silver eagles and 670,500 gold eagles have been purchased.

Here are the individual breakouts for many of the coins discussed above:
