US Mint Sales: Proof Sets Soar, Braille Dollars Plunge, Rail Splitters Pass 25 Million

US Mint Sales Figures ImageThe latest batch of US Mint sales show soaring 2009 Proof Sets, Braille Silver Dollars collapsing, Guam quarters sizzling, Rail Splitter cents rising and UHR $20s normalizing.

The Mint’s 18-coin proof set went on sale Monday, June 1. In a blazing rage, collectors purchased 437,178 of the sets in a single week. For more on this story, read the CoinNews article: Soaring 2009 Proof Set Sales.

In contrast, Braille Silver Dollars had what can only be described as a back-breaking week. For whatever reason — the Mint does not indicate the whys in weekly reports — the uncirculated coins tumbled to levels of prior weeks. 2,071 were subtracted from the Mint’s previously reported sales figures. The proof option was an exception as sales increased by 1 percent.

The freshly released Guam quarters are selling remarkably well in bags and rolls. For more than a week the 1000-coin bags have been listed on the Mint’s site as "temporarily unavailable." The sales figures for these barely moved (they in fact declined just a touch). The 100-coin bags and two-roll sets, however, are tracking in with increases over the prior figures between 59 and 70 percent.

Lincoln Rail Splitter cents in two-roll sets have passed another milestone. 13,192 more were added to the total, bringing the number of new pennies purchased by collectors to over 25 million. With 250,557 of the sets sold at $8.95 each, the Mint has grossed $2.24 million from $250,557 worth of pennies.

Ultra High Relief (UHR) $20 gold coin demand normalized following higher than typical sales during the prior week. The $50 UHR price increase on Wednesday, June 3, no doubt made them less appealing.

First Spouse Gold Coins also settled down following stronger than normal numbers last week. This round, five of the eight coins suffered from lower sales. For more on the series, read Van Buren’s Liberty First Spouse Proof Coin Tops 6,000 in Sales.

With the exception of the already mentioned Braille dollars, sales of silver coins and sets improved across the board. Read US Silver Coin Sales for more.
