Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce a striking new issue on behalf of the Isle of Man to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the First Man on the Moon

First Man on the Moon Anniversary Silver Coin

It was a key moment in history when, on 21 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin stepped off the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and took their first steps on the Moon. Armstrong stepped off the Eagle and made his first steps on the moon famously describing it as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

After spending 2 ½ hours on the surface of the moon, the astronauts went, leaving a number of things behind – an American Flag, a number of instruments they had used, a gold olive branch to represent peace and a silicone disk containing goodwill messages from Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and 73 Leaders of Countries around the world.

The mission had fulfilled President John F Kennedy’s goal of reaching the moon before the end of the 1960s and millions of people watched the moon landing on their televisions. Man has traveled to the Moon a number of times since but it terms of people landing on any other planets; no-one has been successful as yet.

We know a lot more about space now than we did 40 years ago and satellites and spacecrafts have returned footage to us that show us the surfaces of Mars, Venus and other planets, but the Moon Landing from 1969 is still probably the most important moment in space history as it showed we could travel and land on the Moon successfully and people could walk on its surface.

The design on the reverse of the coin is an image of an Astronaut on the Moon standing next to the American Flag. The wording 40th Anniversary of First Man on the Moon features in the surround. The obverse of the coin bears a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD.

Available in Proof Fine 999.9 Gold, Proof Sterling Silver and Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and being carefully struck four times to produce a glorious finish, the design is sculpted in striking relief. To view this coin please visit www.pobjoy.com

I have a 1969 Anniversary Medal . It has the names of the Astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong’s name on it, and the Date July 20th, 1969. The Coin or Medal also show Neil Armstrong carrying the American Flag, and also the word Collins on it. On the other side it show the Earth and the Moom circling with a heart in the middle. It is on an old key chain. Is this something that is valuable?

Thank you, Tom Diamond
