US Government Prints 617.6 Million Notes Worth $22.1 Billion in March

BEP Production FiguresThe U.S. government in March produced more banknotes for the third consecutive month, according to Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) figures released Tuesday, April 7.

Although the agency printed substantially less $10s and $50s, the difference was made up with more $1s, $20s, and $100s. Additionally, the BEP printed 76.8 million $5s when none were produced in February.

However, the combined value of all notes was less than the prior month. In total, 617,600,000 banknotes were produced in March with a value of $22,124,800,000. In contrast, the BEP printed 556.8 M notes worth $25.3 billion in February.

Spread across the 31 days in March, the BEP averaged some 19.9 million notes per day with a total daily face value worth about $714 million.

The agency also produced 30,000 sheets of $1 star notes (total of these not in table below). Star notes are replacements for misprinted notes or certain serial numbers, like 000 000 000. These notes are generally more desirable to collectors as they are rarer.
