The numbers are especially meaningful because they represent sales in a very bad economy.

Rare gold coin sells for £20,000

A rare gold coin, dating from about 830 to 850 AD, has been sold at auction in Suffolk for nearly £20,000. The coin, which is about the size of a 20p piece, was among the possessions of a road-worker from the King’s Lynn area of Norfolk who had died.

One £1 coin in 40 is a fake

A Royal Mint sampling of coins in circulation found the number in circulation rose by 27 per cent during 2008 meaning one £1 coin in every 40 is a fake. This is compared to one in 50 in 2007 and one in 100 in 2002.
