Godless Coins Real or Just an Urban Myth?

Urban legends regarding coins and bank notes can be entertaining. I wrote about many of them in my 2004 book Superstition, Urban Legends and Our Money (PublishAmerica). Well, according to an Aug. 22 article appearing in The Grand Rapids (Mich.) Express newspaper, the recently released U.S. Andrew Jackson dollar coin has created an urban legend of its own. Some people apparently don’t understand that the legend “In God We Trust” appears on the edge rather than on the obverse or reverse.

The Proof Condition

A majority of collectors are familiar with modern US Proof coins that are seen with highly reflective, mirror-like fields and frosty devices. While the Mint issued Proofs with other finishes in the past, for the sake of simplicity, I’ll deal with the mirror-surfaced examples here. Proof coins are special in that they are carefully struck, more than once, on polished planchets in order to bring out the utmost beauty of each coin’s design. Proofs represent the high point of the minter’s art.

ANA searches for revenue

…The financial pinch is squeezing ever harder. I write that because of what I saw was being considered. The [ANA] board is thinking of charging nonmembers admission fees to its conventions and to the museum in Colorado Springs. I can just hear the late George Hatie now. He was legal counsel for many years before Christopher Cipoletti took over the job.
