There is a problem with this story and it involves magnets.
If this penny was copper a magnet would not stick to it either.
Only the Steel war pennies would stick to a magnet and they were steel in color (or rusted).

Carol: All 1942-D Lincolns were struck in bronze. They were made in huge numbers so they're only worth a few cents in average condition. The only rarities are 1943 cents struck in bronze and 1944 cents struck in steel. All others from that time period are very common even today. Also, FWIW the mint mark can't be "O" because the New Orleans Mint closed in 1909.

Gilbert: As mentioned, a 1943 cent is rare only if it's made from bronze. So many steel cents were saved as curiosities that they're only worth 25 to 50 cents in average condition. Lots of them were copper-plated and sold as novelties but these are easy to identify. As the article states (you did see this part, I hope) a steel cent will stick to a magnet even if it's plated, but a bronze one won't. Chances are 99.9999% that a suspected 1943 "copper" cent is really just one of those plated items but you should grab a magnet anyway...
