2008 Singapore Independence Commemorative Coins

The Singapore Mint launched commemorative coins today celebrating Singapore’s 43 years of independence. $2 silver and cupro-nickel proof versions were released as well as a "2-in-1" set containing each.

According to the Mint’s announcement, the reverse or tails design of the coins bear the National Day Parade (NDP) logo — a symbol for the NDP 2008 Theme, "Celebrating the Singapore Spirit."

It depicts:

 

"… five young Singaporeans, reaching for the stars. This represents the next generation of Singaporeans, full of energy, striving for excellence and confident of a brighter future ahead."

 

The Singapore Flyer and various NDP parade activities are also represented on the coins.

The obverse or heads side of the coin includes an image of the Singapore Arms and the date of 2008.

Coin specifications, mint limits and prices

The Mint provided the following specifications and limits for the coins:


$2 Silver Proof Coin

20 grams of 999 fine silver with full colour application. Coin diameter of 38.70 mm. Mintage of 8,000 pieces.

The price is $66 (S), which is about $48 (US).

$2 Cupro-Nickel Proof-Like Coin

Proof-like condition with selective colour application. Coin diameter of 38.70 mm and weight of 20 grams. Mintage will be based on demand.

The price is $20.50 (S), which is about $15 (US).

2-in-1 Coin Set

The above two coins are also available in a 2-in-1 Premium Set, with a low mintage of 2,008 sets only.

The price for the set is $104 (S), which is about $76 (US).
