Mandela Birthday Coin from South African Mint

87

A commemorative Nelson Mandela "Madiba" five rand (R5) coin was introduced today by the South African Mint and Reserve Bank to celebrate Mandela’s 90th birthday.

Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Coin

Five million bi-metallic coins featuring a smiling Mandela have already been minted and will be released into circulation as part of his official birthday cerebration on Friday, July 18. The R5 coins are legal tender and have a circulating value of about 65 cents (US) each.

Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni indicated the coin’s portrait includes Mandela wearing his signature pattern shirt, which "differentiates him from other portrayals of states persons on coins."

At a ceremonial minting for one of the coins, Reuters news quoted Mandela as smiling and jokingly saying,

“I am a bit richer this morning and I am not going to associate with poor people any more … This is very nice.”

Many South Africans affectionately use the former president’s clan name of Madiba, resulting in the commemorative coin often being called the "Madiba R5".

In 2007, the South African Mint also launched a pure gold and silver Protea Coin Series honoring former Presidents, Mr Nelson Mandela and Mr FW de Klerk who jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Dear readers The 2008 Mandela 90th R5 coins are a very special currency release! But only the uncirculatd and proof specimens which are graded and certified by globally recognized third party graders (NGC & PCGS) are actually worth collecting/investing in. The best step you could make is seek advice of reputable dealer, one of whom are the SA Coin Corp in Woodmead, South Africa. Most sellers on auction websites are most often uninformed and lack numismatic knowledge. As an investment it can only be taken seriously if you have the backing of professionals. I’m very happy that the above company… Read more »

When someone gave me this coin as change three months ago, I simply tossed in among my socks as a souvenir. While cleaning out the holey socks today 8th June, it tumbled to the floor. I reckoned, “Oh well, maybe someone else may need it”, so I looked it up on the web. Being ignorant about these things, the first site I visited gave me a fright. R1.4 million. Being skeptical, I visted every other site. I first looked at a special edition. I kept searching. At last I found the true value, IE: From R14 to R30 depending on… Read more »

I have a couple of MS 66 and MS 67 Mandela 90th birthday coins, which I would sell for R 1,500 and R 4,500 respectively. I also own 1 of 11 MS 62’s – for this one I will only look at an attractive offer as they are extremely rare. Also on offer is the Mandela platinum birthday set, consisting of 1 oz gold and 0.5 oz platinum medalions – launch price on these were R 36,000 november last.

For those that say the Mandela 90th birthday coins are only worth R5,think again. I have a number of sealed bags from the mint of these coins containing 400 ocins each. These bags are selling like hot cakes with fudge, for the awesome price of R16 000 per bag.(Was R8000 6 months ago and In 2 weeks it is probably going to be R17 000) If that is not enough, the price goes up almost weekly just to keep up with the trading. I also have coins graded by NGC and you can not keep up with the demand for… Read more »

Stephen

All the firms that sell Mandela coins for thousands of rands are, in my opinion, and according to my own experiences, real crooks. They are VERY eager to do business with you when you want to purchase Mandela coins. And even after the purchase they regularly send you info about how much those coins have “appreciated” in value and how many thousands of rands they are worth currently. They even regularly enquire telephonically whether you would like to buy some more of this and that fantastic coin. UNTIL the day that you phone them and want to resall those coins.… Read more »

All the above comments would not exist if there really was a market for the coins we bought in good faith with hard earned cash.
I CHALLENGE SA COIN COIN DEALERS, SELLERS, COPANIES AND SA COIN EXCHANGE TO ANSWER SOME OF THESE QUESTIONS IN A TRANSPERENT WAY….FOR ALL TO SEE. ONLY THE TRUTH PLEASE!!!

Hi would like to know where i can sell my 1994 R5 Presidential Inauguration coin?????????? And more or less whats its worth?????

I have Nelson Mandela birthday coins Presidential Inauguration i want information where i can sell them.

Bernadette

I have 90th birthday mandela coin, please let me know what is the value of this coin or where I can have it sold.

Chrystal

I also have a 90th Birthday Mandela Coin which came to me via circulation. When I called SA Coin, they said that the circulation coin is worth only R5 and the certified ones are worth more and then tried to convince me to invest in them. Not sure what the deal is because if it came from the bank it should be the same thing. I asked him if I could take the coin to the bank to get it certified and he said that it has nothing to do with the bank. My best advice is to wait for… Read more »

Linnette

i have two R5 coins contacted Sacoin they tell they tell they are worth R100000 but the ones i have are worth R5.will they ever have value in the near future??

Tlharihani Masia

I am just like the restp of the people above, would any one just let us know the exact truth behind these coins.

Tlharihani Masia

I think we are being tricked here, they want to have these coins from us for free and then they will sell them and make money for themselves, why aren’t they communicating about this then?

George Marufu

pple pls dont rush to sell your coins. nobody seems to have an idea about the exact value though I suspect someone is secretely collecting them as future investments. I have 2 myself and it is my sincere wish to collect as many as possible. there are 2 things about the coins…either you can sell them later or you can be as close as you may possibly be to the magic of madiba through those coins. so hold on.

Jacques

Hey dudes..i dont know alot about these coin stuff..lol..i have 2 mandela R5 coins 90th Birthday.circulated 🙁 of course but perfect condition..how much can i get for one?
where do i go to sell? please if anyone have some advice.. thank you

Gerhard

Here is your answer on the value of your R5 Mandela coins.http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/seller/954693/EWAAN_Galleries The way i see it is that SACoin is not what they say they are. Visit the above link on bidorbuy and see the real value of high graded coins. SACoin value the R5 90th birthday coin in the thousands but bidorbuy’s prices are only a couple of hundreds. Who is fooling whom??? After studying all the relevant topics on these coins it seems that if your coin is not graded it is only worth what it says on the coin. In this case a non graded and… Read more »

Hi,can any one tell me how do you get your madiba 5rand coin graded!!!mine looks brand new plz!

Gerhard

To grade coins: ngccoin.com and pcgs.com

Anton

hi guys. An ungraded 90th birthday coin is only worth five rand and may be worth something in about fifty years time. A proof coin could only be obtained at the mint or coin dealers and these are the valuable coins worth keeping or selling. Five million circulation coins was made for circulation and not collector items. It’s fraudulant to try to sell these coins for thousands and hopeless to think you’ll get rich from these coins.

I have a 2008 madiba R5 coin…wanna find out where i can sell and whats it worth today

Gerhard

Raymond Your R5 is only worth R5 if it is not graded. If it is graded you can go to bid or buy (website) to see what it is worth. If you wanna buy a graded R5 Mandela 90th birthday i suggest you buy from bid or buy. You can pick one up for less than R300. Sa Coin will sell it to you for app R1300.00. Do some research on the net before you buy. These coins are not nearly as valuable as a certain website makes it to be. And i doubt if the value of this particular… Read more »

As long as the coin is graded – MS (Mint State) or PF (Proof) There is value in the Coin. Do beware of cheap imitations coming up on Bid or Buy (made in Philiphines). In my view having done ALOT of extensive research and a Registered Member of NGC USA. These coins DO most certainly hold value and there is an increasing demand for the graded coins. The issue comes when the GOLD Coin dealers., dont want to see a CIRCULATED coin gain value. This effects their business negatively. FACT is that there is a demand/Market for the MS (Mint… Read more »
