Puerto Rico quarter are selling at an exceptional pace, based on US Mint weekly sales reports and compared to prior quarter offerings.
With 2009 quarter production plummeting and no signals in sight for a reversal any time soon, there is little surprise as to why demand for the coins has peaked.
Registering lows that have not been seen in over 40 years, the 2009-P has a mintage of just 53.2 million and the 2009-D has a mintage of 86 million. The relative Puerto Rico quarter scarcity compared to prior quarters has driven demand (an attractive quarter design certainly is a bonus).

The latest US Mint figures show a massive production decline for circulating 2009 quarters as compared to ANY of the state quarters minted from 1999-2008. Or, for that matter, quarters issued from many more years past.

Of all the 50 state quarters, the 2008 Oklahoma quarter fell at the bottom with a circulating mintage of 416.6 million. (In contrast, the 2000 Virginia quarter came in at a whopping 1.6 billion.) The DC and Puerto Rico mintages combined is 311.4 million, which is less than Oklahoma’s.

The United States Mint will offer the 2009 DC & US Territories Quarters Silver Proof Mint Set at noon ET on Monday, March 23. The six-coin set has a price tag of $29.95, plus shipping and handling.
Traditional annual coin sets are always very popular with collectors, but unlike the standard 2009 Quarters Proof Set, which launched on Jan. 5 and is priced at $14.95, the six quarter-dollars in the silver set are struck in 90 percent silver.

The United States Mint will begin selling 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Proof Sets for $14.95 each on Monday, January 5, at noon (ET).
The set includes the six proof 2009 quarters with reverse designs honoring the District of Columbia (D.C.), the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Demand for this annual set is typically strong. According to the latest sales figures, the US Mint sold 672,004 of the 2008-dated version. Current eBay auctions have prices listed that are nearly double that of what the Mint charged.
