The first newly designed Lincoln cent in 50 years was officially launched into circulation Thursday morning at Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky.
In total, four new circulating cents will be issued in 2009 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abe’s birth and the 100th anniversary of Lincoln cent first issued in 1909.
The first coin released Thursday depicts a log cabin, which represents Lincoln’s birth and early childhood in Kentucky.

The United States Mint is geared up to issue celebratory bicentennial Lincoln cents and has released 2009 Lincoln Penny images for public viewing. The coin images are timely. The first of four commemorative circulating cents will launch on Thursday, February 12, to kick-off the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth.

Similar to the 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar images released last week, the new images provide a genuine sense of how the coins will look and feel up close, unlike the initial penny designs made available in September of 2008.

The United States Mint published 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar prices on Friday and said it would offer introductory discounts for several weeks following the commemorative silver dollar launch.
The silver coins celebrate the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln’s birth with up to 500,000 proof and uncirculated silver dollars issued for collectors beginning on Lincoln’s birthday, February 12.
Additionally, the US Mint will offer a special set that includes the proof silver version and proofs of the four newly designed 2009 Lincoln cents.
Lincoln Silver Dollar designs were revealed by the Mint during the annual Dedication Day Ceremony at Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg on November 19, which was the 145th anniversary of the day that Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address. The reverse or tails side of the silver coins feature the last 43 words of the Gettysburg Address, encircled in a laurel wreath.

2009 Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollar Commemorative Coin images have been released by the United States Mint. The one year issued only coins commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth in 1809.

Lincoln Silver Dollar designs were revealed by the Mint on November 19 during the annual Dedication Day Ceremony at Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg. The newest images, however, provide a much better sense of how the coins actually look.
The Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Coin Act calls for up to 500,000 uncirculated and proof silver dollars for collectors this year, and four new Lincoln circulating cents to celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth.

Colorado students in 31 elementary, middle and high schools collected nearly 3.8 million in pennies, or $37,826.02, for local charities during the 18th annual Penny Harvest.
The Penny Harvest is a national program that comes to fruition each fall when children scour their neighborhood in search of pennies.
Collected pennies are tallied toward year’s end with youthful philanthropy in full stride as students select charities of their choice to help with cash grants and services.

Commemorative 2009 Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollar Coin designs were revealed by the United States Mint on Wednesday during the annual Dedication Day Ceremony at Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The ceremony occurred on the 145th anniversary of the dedication of Soldiers’ National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic Gettysburg Address in 1863 and also where United States Mint Deputy Director Andrew Brunhart unveiled the commemorative Lincoln coin designs to the public.

Nearly 500,000 students from across the country have begun scouring for loose pennies and going door-to-door asking for spare cents. But the pennies are not for them, they’re for charity. And best of all, Penny Harvest teaches children about their value in working together, sharing and contributing to society.

From now until Thanksgiving, students between the ages of four and fourteen will call themselves Penny Harvesters as they collect millions of pennies from family, friends and neighbors. All collections are then one hundred percent donated in the form of grants to non-profit organizations student leaders select. From helping the elderly to protecting the environment to over a thousand other worthy charities, the students make the call to where the money goes.

The Perth Mint of Australia on the first of
October began offering a historic five-coin collection that contains pre-decimal copper coins struck at The Perth Mint between 1940 and 1964.
Unlike new, commemorative, silver or gold coin products that are common from government Mints, these coins have traveled through many hands and are in choice circulated condition with signs of wear. For these coins, it’s about their history. According to the Mint’s website,
The Perth Mint began striking pre-decimal coinage on an annual basis from 1940. Producing many millions of copper coins, the historic Mint struck pennies and halfpennies for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the unique King George VI 1946 Shilling.
The five-coin set contains examples of these historic denominations and are encapsulated within a ‘Coins of The Perth Mint’ presentation folder with information for each coin type.
