Fort Worth ANA National Money Show Extended to Four Days

ANACOLORADO SPRINGS – The American Numismatic Association will expand its National Money Show™ from three days to four days, beginning with the spring convention in Fort Worth, TX, in March 2010, Executive Director Larry Shepherd announced.

The show, initially scheduled to be open to the public Friday through Sunday, will now be open Thursday, March 25 through Sunday, March 28 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Dealer set-up will be open on Wednesday afternoon. Adding the extra day signals a commitment from the ANA to expand the size of the National Money Show. Bowers and Merena Shines in March with Two Standout Auctions

Bowers and Merena’s Official Auctions of the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention and the ANA National Money Show Realize Nearly $10.5 Million

IRVINE, Calif. – Bowers and Merena Auctions, America’s leading rare coin and currency auction house, made an outstanding showing in March with two impressive auction successes. Most recently, Bowers and Merena presented its first Official Auction of the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention for 2009 on March 26-27, continuing their long tenure as official Baltimore auctioneer.

1870-CC Double Eagle Gold Coin

The Baltimore auction realized $8,026,977. The Official Auction of the ANA National Money Show held March 12-13 in Portland, Ore., realized $2,468,258, and is the first of Bowers and Merena’s two official auctions for the American Numismatic Association conventions of 2009.  

The big winner overall was Baltimore lot 3909 from the Southerly Collection [image above], an outstanding Choice AU 1870-CC Double Eagle Winter 1-A graded AU-55 by NGC. The single highest-graded example of this famous frontier-era rarity known to PCGS and NGC, it realized $414,000 after a session of spirited bidding.

Heritage Donates $1,500 for ANA Youth Memberships

ANAHeritage Auction Galleries donated $1,500 in memberships for young collectors to the American Numismatic Association. As a result, more than 75 one-year memberships were given at the Portland National Money Show™, March 13-15.

The ANA welcomed more than 400 Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to four merit badge and patch workshops in Portland. At each of the workshops, 15 memberships were awarded. Exhibitors Recognized at ANA Portland National Money Show

ANAANA member Henry Scott Goodman received the Best-in-Show Exhibit Award for his exhibit, "Ludwig Gies: Cast Art Medals from the Great War," at the American Numismatic Association’s 2009 National Money Show™, held March 13-15 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.

The first runner-up award was presented to James Reinders for "Encased 3 Cent Postage Stamps of the Civil War" and the second runner-up award went to Jerry Bobbe for "The Times and Tokens of Thomas Spence."

The People’s Choice Award, determined by voting of convention attendees, ended in a tie and was presented to Simcha Kuritzky for "Feline Species Type Set" and Josh Wadsworth for "It’s All About the Numbers of U.S. Small-Sized Paper Money."

The National Coin Week Award was presented to young numismatist Katie Reinders for her exhibit, "Oregon Celebrated on Coins: Oh the Joy!" National Coin Week exhibits are intended to be suitable for display in libraries and schools, so there is a $250 limit on the value of the numismatic materials in this competition. Olsen 1913 Liberty Head Nickel at Portland National Money Show

ANAThe Olsen specimen 1913 Liberty Head nickel, the most famous of five known specimens, will be displayed at the 2009 National Money Show™ in Portland, Oregon [March 13-15].

The coin has been graded Proof-64 by both PCGS and NGC. It has the distinction of being the only 1913 Liberty Head nickel ever handled by B. Max Mehl, who made it a centerpiece of his lifelong advertising campaign. It was also briefly owned by Egyptian King Farouk. When the set of five 1913 nickels was broken up in the 1940s, the Olsen specimen was sold first to James Kelly and then to Fred Olsen, whose name it has kept ever since. PCGS at ANA Portland Convention

PCGS President Don WillisThe Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) will offer on-site authentication and grading services at the upcoming American Numismatic Association (ANA) National Money Show™, March 13 – 15, 2009. The three-day convention will be held in the Oregon Convention Center, Hall C, at 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Portland, Oregon.

Collectors and dealers can meet PCGS President Don Willis during an informal "Meet the Expert" session at the booth (#328) on Friday, March 13. He will be available to give personal opinions about your coins from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

ANA to Host 2009-11 Board Candidates Forum at Portland National Money Show

ANAThe American Numismatic Association will host a 2009-11 Board of Governors Candidates Forum on Saturday, March 14 at the Portland National Money Show.™

The forum will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 119 of the Oregon Convention Center, and will be moderated by Beth Deisher, editor of Coin World.

1804 Dollar, "Portland Penny" Headline 2009 National Money Show

ANAThe American Numismatic Association’s 2009 Portland National Money Show™ gives visitors the opportunity to see rare coins and paper money, and interact with the country’s premier numismatists.

The show, held March 13-15 at the Oregon Convention Center, features marquee and collector exhibits, educational presentations, and hundreds of top dealers.

 

"The ANA is thrilled to be coming back to this great numismatic city," said ANA Executive Director Larry Shepherd. "The Portland National Money Show in 2004 was one of our best, and high dealer interest, great educational activities and impressive exhibits point to an even better show this year."

 

The marquee exhibits are highlighted by the Linderman-duPont specimen 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar. Insured for $3.5 million, this will be the first public display of the coin outside the ANA Money Museum in Colorado Springs since its recovery 16 years ago from a famous theft decades earlier.
