The Perth Mint of Australia announced on Tuesday the world-wide launch of the second proof issue from its renowned Australian Koala Gold Coin Series, the 2009 Koala Gold Proof Coin.

This year the design features an eye-catching image of a young koala facing out while sitting on a branch eating gum leaves.

Koalas are one the few iconic symbols strongly associated with Australia. They are indigenous only to Australia where they spend most of their life high up in Eucalyptus trees eating leaves. The Perth Mint on Monday issued its newest addition to the extremely popular Australian Koala silver coin series, the one ounce 2009 Koala Gilded Silver Coin. Making a stunning collectible, this year’s limited release portrays a new image of a koala that has been gilded in 24-carat gold.

The gilded embellishment has been used just one other time on the Australian Koala coin, and is one of the most celebrated numismatic treatments by the Perth Mint. The gilding prominently portrays a young Koala as it sits on a tree branch.

Australia’s iconic Koala coins are more popular than ever. The Perth Mint of Australia has launched a new coin series of 2008 proof gold Koalas, its first Gilded Koala and their second pure silver Koala. Each bullion coin depicts the "cuddly" koala and her baby sitting on a tree branch.
