The Government of the British Virgin Islands has approved the release of a new coin to celebrate the Centenary of Naval Aviation.

On 7 May 1909, the Admiralty placed the first order for an aircraft specifically for use in military and naval operations. Little did they know that this single action would ultimately lead to them being one of the key players in the development of military and naval aviation around the world and to the eventual foundation of the Royal Air Force.
Despite initially trying to dissuade officers from following an aviation career, it was soon realised that those that took to the skies in those early days were not only adventurous and brave men but also pioneers in this new form of warfare. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 celebrates the Twentieth Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Isle of Man Treasury has issued a coin to commemorate this historical event.
Between the end of the World War II and the establishment of the two German States, the FRG and the GDR, the base for the division of Germany were laid. Following a period when a large number of people crossed from East Germany to West, the GDR government feared the collapse of East Germany. Their answer was to erect a wall. It was a key moment in history when, on 21 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin stepped off the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and took their first steps on the Moon. Armstrong stepped off the Eagle and made his first steps on the moon famously describing it as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
After spending 2 ½ hours on the surface of the moon, the astronauts went, leaving a number of things behind – an American Flag, a number of instruments they had used, a gold olive branch to represent peace and a silicone disk containing goodwill messages from Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and 73 Leaders of Countries around the world. World’s First Pyramid Shaped Coin Encapsulated with Sand - 70th Anniversary of the Death of Howard Carter
For the first time in thirty five years, London welcomed back the treasures of the world’s most famous pharaoh, Tutankhamun. In 1972, the unprecedented Tutankhamun Exhibition fascinated visitors worldwide with London striking attendance records of 1.7 million.

In November 2007 these marvellous historical artefacts and more returned to London – the only city in Europe to host the ‘Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs’ exhibition – and to celebrate this momentous event, Pobjoy Mint is thrilled to announce the release of another coin on behalf of the Isle of Man Treasury, which is the world’s first pyramid shaped coin containing sand from Tutankhamun’s tomb! The 2008 proof commemoratives were minted on behalf of the Isle of Man Government by the Pobjoy Mint, who has become known for their innovative approach to modern coin issues, and minted the world’s first pyramid shaped coin in 2007.

A treasure hunter who discovered nearly 500 silver Viking coins by metal detecting on the Isle of Man will finally receive $600,000 in compensation.
Andy Whewell found 464 silver Viking coins, 26 silver ingots and an armlet in a field in Glenfaba in March 2003.
The coins were declared Treasure Trove in August of that year, with resulting expectations of receiving fair market value for the hoard.
However, Whewell and Manx National Heritage, the government agency responsible for protecting and promoting the cultural historical heritage of the Isle of Man, could not come to an agreement over the value of the coins and other artifacts.

The world’s first pyramid shaped coin makes its debut today. The three-sided coin is so uniquely shaped that you wouldn’t carry it around in your pocket.

You certainly could, if you didn’t mind the pointed edges poking your thighs. And the new coin is legal tender by the Isle of Man government. However, it’s not meant for general circulation.
