Denmark Launches Northern Lights Polar Coins

Greenland Northern Lights and scientific research is the theme for the third and final series of Denmark Polar coins to commemorate the International Polar Year (IPY), which is a large scientific program focused on the Arctic and Antarctic.

Denmark Northern Lights 1,000 Kroner Gold Polar Coin

Circulating aluminum bronze 10-krone coins and collector editions in .999 silver and .900 gold with denominations of 100 and 1,000 kroner were launched Monday by Danmarks Nationalbank.

Say Goodbye to the Smallest Danish Coin, the 25-Øre

Danish 25 oreThe smallest denominated Danish coin, the 25-øre, will be removed from circulation on October 1, 2008. Denmark’s Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, Bendt Bendtsen, made the announcement today and was quoted as saying,

"Consumers will not notice a thing, apart from their pockets being lighter."

The coin is not only being eliminated from circulation, but after October 1, it will no longer be legal tender in Denmark. However, at least for a short time after, the coins may be cashed in at Danmarks Nationalbank.
