2009 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins launched on Thursday, Dec. 3. By Sunday, sales reached 7,207 of the maximum 8,000 allotted according to the latest US Mint report on current coin purchases. A sell out appears imminent, and is only a matter of time.
The price tag for the 99.95 percent pure, one ounce platinum eagle is currently set at $1,792.00, with an order limit in place of 5 per household. While the price may seem high for a modern collectible with a premium of some $350 over the current spot of platinum, it is a bargain when considering the 2008 issue price of $2,299.95.
Platinum Eagles have not been available from the US Mint all year and, and as it announced in October, no bullion versions will be struck until at least 2010.
Also, there are no uncirculated versions and no fractional one-half, one-quarter and one-tenth ounce sizes — these were discontinued when the Mint reshaped its numismatic product line in Nov. 2008.
These facts help explain the increased demand, and faster selling pace. The US Mint sold just 4,769 of the one ounce proof coins last year.

The US Mint today released the 2009 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin at an inaugural issue price of $1,792.
The coins each contain 99.95 percent pure platinum, are limited to a maximum mintage of 8,000 and have a order limit in place of five per household.
The 2009 Platinum Eagle features a new reverse or tails side design emblematic of the principle "To Form a More Perfect Union," the first of six principles of American democracy found in the Preamble to the United States Constitution.
This year’s theme depicts the diversity of the nation with four faces on the left looking towards the right, hair and clothing weaved together. The weaving completes a circle where within the concept is inscribed. It was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

A dynamic shift in pricing for US gold and platinum collector coins is underway, according to a United States Mint notice published Tuesday by the Federal Register, which is the official daily source for rules, proposed rules, and notices of government agencies and organization.
Instead of static pricing, coin prices will be primarily determined and actively adjusted according to the London Fix weekly average. The Mint said this was to "mitigate the effect that fluctuating gold and platinum commodity costs" has on coins. The London Fix is used as a price benchmark for immediate silver, gold and platinum delivery.

The pace at which gold and platinum collector coins have disappeared from U.S. Mint store shelves is blistering. The final two uncirculated gold Buffalo coins sold out over the weekend, the last proof Buffalo went Monday afternoon, and the proof American Eagle platinum one ounce, one-half ounce and one-quarter ounce options sold out this morning.
Further, the Eagle platinum proof one-tenth ounce and four-coin set may be joining the "sold out" ranks since their shipping dates have been delayed. In past weeks, that has been a strong indicator of a quickly depleting inventory. It appears the proof and uncirculated American Eagle gold coins will soon be the sole remaining collector options available.
With all these latest sell outs, it is worth remembering the collector gold and platinum coins the U.S. Mint announced it will no longer produce in 2009:
