American Buffalo gold coinAll 2008-W American Buffalo Gold Uncirculated coins for collectors have sold out, according to the United States Mint online store.

The one-ounce and one half-ounce gold coins joined the ranks of other fractional sizes, moving to the “product is not available” category over the weekend. Their sales had increased over the previous week by 8.7 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively.

The Mint’s gold and platinum coin series has been ablaze in sellouts of late. The American Buffalo gold uncirculated 4-coin set sold out last Monday while the proof quarter-ounce version and the final platinum Eagle uncirculated coins went Wednesday.

American Eagle Gold Uncirculated CoinThe United States Mint halted production and will no longer ship 2008 one-half ounce and one-quarter ounce American Eagle gold coins to authorized dealers, it was announced Monday. Additional gold and platinum coins will be halted when their blank inventories are depleted.

 

"Due to the extreme fluctuating market conditions for 2008, as well as current market conditions, gold and silver demand is unprecedented and the demand for platinum is unusually high," the U.S. Mint said in a memorandum.

"The U.S. Mint has worked diligently to attempt to meet demand, however, blank supplies are very limited and it is necessary for the U.S. Mint to focus remaining bullion production primarily on American Eagle Gold one-ounce and Silver one-ounce coins," the Mint said.

American Buffalo one-ounce bullion coinThe United States Mint has temporarily suspended sales of American Buffalo one-ounce bullion coins to their network of Authorized Purchasers, it was announced Thursday.

 

"Demand has exceeded supply for American Buffalo 24-karat gold one-ounce bullion coins, and our inventories have been depleted. We are, therefore, temporarily suspending sales of these coins," the Mint said in a memorandum.

The first sales figures from the United States Mint are in for 2008 fractional Buffalo gold coins. In total, a solid 67,331 of the new fractionals have been sold.

American Buffalo gold coinThe 24 karat gold coins were once offered in one-ounce proof versions only.

On July 22, the Mint expanded the product line by issuing fractional denominations of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights and in both proof and uncirculated.

The 1/10 ounce gold sizes are proving to be the most popular coins. Their lower prices have helped sales even though the Mint charges higher premiums for these smallest coins.

2008 American Buffalo and American Eagle Gold CoinsThe United States Mint today announced the introduction of a new coin product named the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set. The set includes two, uncirculated one-half ounce gold coins — the 22-karat American Eagle and the 24-karat American Buffalo.

The two-coin set is priced at $1,298.95, and will go on sale at the Mint’s online website on August 1, 2008 at noon (ET).

The prosperity set is the second offering in the United States Mint Celebration Series, which is an experimental program to explore the viability of coins "that are packaged and positioned to celebrate special gift-giving occasions and celebratory events."

The Mint’s first product in the series was launched in February to celebrate the 2008 Lunar New Year with an American Buffalo 2008 Celebration Coin.
