Platinum Hits Record High: Will Coin Sales Follow?

Platinum on the rise, breaking recordsPlatinum hit a record high as strong industrial demand and supply fears drove investors to buy.

Spot platinum made it to $1,519 an ounce, breaking the $1,500 barrier for the first time on Monday.

It then pulled back slightly for the night, yet was still sitting at $1507 an ounce at 2:20 p.m. (ET on Tuesday).

Sales Begin for the US Mint’s 10th Anniversary American Eagle Platinum Coins

10th anniversary for the American Eagle Platinum coinsAs a quick reminder, the United States Mint started selling the 10th Anniversary American Eagle Platinum coins at noon (EST) today.

There’s definite interest in these coins. Several thousand CoinNews subscribers read our Nov. 28 article about the anniversary set, making it a top 5 for the month of December. Whether that napkin math analysis translates to buying power and the coins selling out, is entirely another question.

The anniversary set is priced at $1,949.95. There’s a limit of 30,000 total sets and one per household. At the time of this writing, 3:00 (EST), they’re still available to order.

U.S. Mint Offers Special American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Set

This 2007 American Eagle Platinum Proof coin is an example of one coin included in the new 10th Anniversary American Eagle Platinum Set. The other coin is an enhanced reverse proof American Eagle Platinum (no picture available).Coin collectors have been awaiting for the expected announcement and it’s here.

It’s the 10th anniversary for the American Eagle Platinum coins and to celebrate, the U.S. Mint has changed it up with a limited edition, two-coin set that’s just for collectors.

Included in the set is one proof coin and, for the first time ever, one enhanced reverse proof platinum coin. Each contains one-half ounce of .9995 platinum.

Get your money ready, because the sets go on sale through the U.S. Mint website beginning December 13, 2007, at 12 noon (ET).
