$700 Price Increase for Mint’s American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Coins

The U.S. Mint has reopened sales of the American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Coin Set. The set was on a near two month hiatus, having been suspended for sale due to the surging price of platinum.

2007 American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Coin Set

Collectors will be less than thrilled with the new $2,649.95 price tag, which is $700 higher than when the coins first went on sale December 13, 2007. However, the set’s percentage premium above the price of platinum is very close to that of the time when the coins were first sold. Feelings of sticker shock really highlight the increase in precious metals prices since December 2007.

Winning Design for New Euro Coin Announced

January 1, 2009 is the 10th anniversary of the first use of euro currency and of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). An estimated 90 million 2-euro commemorative coins will be issued to celebrate the decade and anniversary. And more interesting, the coins will have a common design that was voted on and selected by the public.

The votes are in and counted. The final coin design selected by the public is a drawing of a stick figure blending into the euro symbol. Starting in January 2009, the minted commemorative coins will be issued throughout all euro-area countries.

EU Public Gets to Vote for New Euro Coin Design

The euro became the official currency for participating countries on Jan. 1, 1999. Next year marks its 10-year anniversary and to celebrate a special commemorative 2-euro coin with a common design will be issued in early 2009 throughout all the euro-area countries.
