Proof American Gold Eagle

The United States Mint numismatic product schedule for April shows it to be a busy month. In fact, as it stands now it will be the busiest time for US Mint product releases in 2011.

While subject to change, eight different products have been scheduled by the US Mint for release in April. And while there are no major releases as compared to the core sets and commemorative coins that the US Mint made available earlier this year, there are a couple of items many coin collectors are anxiously awaiting.

A summary of each of the product releases follows.

2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set – April 1

The US Mint is offering the 2011 Quarters Silver Proof Set for $41.95. Encased within a protective clear plastic lens are silver proofs of this year’s five America the Beautiful Quarters® honoring Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Glacier National Park in Montana, Olympic National Park in Washington, Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi, and Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma.

Exactly like the quarters in the 2011 Silver Proof Set, each of the coins is composed of 90 percent silver and each was produced at the US Mint in San Francisco and carry the "S" mint mark. Standard quarter-dollars produced for circulation have a clad composition and are minted in either Denver of Philadelphia.

2011 Glacier National Park Quarter Bags and Rolls – April 4

The US Mint is offering bags and rolls of Glacier National Park Quarters. These are circulation quality coins, but wrapped in US Mint branded rolls and bags. Two-roll sets are priced at $39.95, and include 40 coins from Denver and 40 coins from Philadelphia. The bags have 100 coins, and are listed for $49.95. Buyers have the choice of either Denver or Philadelphia produced coins.

The formal public release of the Glacier quarters will occur during a ceremony on April 13 at 1:00 PM MT at Columbia Falls High School which is located at 610 13th Street West in Columbia Falls, Montana.

2010 Grand Canyon Quarters Three-Coin Set – April 13

The US Mint is playing catch-up with this 2010-dated issue. The Grand Canyon Three-Coin Set is expected to be listed for $14.95. It includes

  • an uncirculated quarter-dollar from the US Mint at Philadelphia,
  • an uncirculated quarter-dollar from the US Mint at Denver, and
  • a proof quarter-dollar from the US Mint at San Francisco

These are numismatic offerings and are intended for coin collectors.

2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Uncirculated Set – April 19

With an expected price tag of $21.95, this year’s quarters uncirculated set includes 10 coins in total.

  • Five uncirculated versions from the Philadelphia Mint, and
  • Five uncirculated versions from struck in the Denver Mint

Specifically, contained within the uncirculated set are the Gettysburg, Glacier, Olympic, Vicksburg, and Chickasaw coins.

Proof American Gold Eagle – April 21

The prices for the Proof Gold Eagle will not be published until it is released at noon ET on April 21. This is the collector version of the American Gold Eagle bullion coin which was released for investors back on January 3.

Buyers should have the option of ordering several sizes — the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz — as well as a 4-coin set which includes them all.

The American Gold Eagle bears the distinctive designs of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ rendition of Liberty, recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful designs, and sculptor Miley Busiek’s equally majestic golden eagle scene meant to symbolize family tradition and unity.

The obverse or heads side of the proof coin shows Liberty with flowing hair and holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The reverse or tails side of the coin has an image of a male eagle carrying an olive branch and flying above a nest with a female eagle and her hatchlings.

Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set – April 27

This year’s Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set includes collector uncirculated versions of the 2011 Presidential $1 Coins. There are 10 coins in total, with five minted in Philadelphia and five from Denver. This year’s dollar coins honor Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes and James A. Garfield. The Mint has not provided an expected price for the set. Last year’s set was listed for $18.95.

2010 Hot Springs 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin – April 28

Just added to the US Mint product schedule is the five ounce Hot Springs National Park Silver Uncirculated Coin. A price has not been published for this debuting America the Beautiful Silver Uncirculated Coin. Since it includes 5 ounces of .999 fine silver, and the price of silver is now over $39 an ounce, a rough guess can be made for parties interested in purchasing it. Unlike its companion bullion version which was sold to the Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers on December 10, the collector uncirculated Hot Springs silver coin will be offered directly by the US Mint to the public.
