2012 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter

Circulating quality Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters were made available today, August 27, 2012, by the United States Mint. The new coins, the 14th in the series of America the Beautiful Quarters, were also officially released into circulation through Federal Reserve banking channels.

‘P’ and ‘D’ quarters are those from the U.S. Mint facilities in Philadelphia and Denver. These are the two government "plants" responsible for producing all of America’s circulating coins that are used in daily commerce. These coins carry the respective ‘P’ or ‘D’ letters as mint marks to distinguish where they were made.

‘S’ mint mark quarters are those from the San Francisco Mint, a facility that until this year had not produced a circulating quality coin in some 30 years. Unlike the ‘P’ and ‘D’s, these will not enter circulation but are minted only for collectors. The U.S. Mint introduced them this year as a means to promote the America the Beautiful Quarters and also offer coin collectors a unique product. There is no guarantee the ‘S’ circulating quarters will get produced beyond this year.
