2012 American Silver Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Set

For many collectors, knowing the mintage limit is valuable information before purchasing a coin or set. For the 2012 San Francisco American Eagle Two-Coin Silver Proof Set, which is being minted to meet demand, the United States Mint did what it could to ease the minds of interested buyers. Each weekday it is posting a cumulative total of all of the units ordered.

[Update: The last sales figure shown in the table further below was later modified downward, likely do to cancellations. The Mint’s final stated sales total was 224,981.]

The total, says the U.S. Mint, is not intended to represent actual sales and is simply an approximation that can be used for informational purposes. It appears on the American Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set product page on the U.S. Mint’s website.

So far, the American Silver Eagle Two Coin Set has been popular, outselling last year’s limited edition 25th Anniversary Set in a few days. Its first day’s sales were 85,341 and on the fifth day, sales topped 115,000. The following grid offers the latest daily sales:

The 2012 San Francisco American Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set is only available for a limited time, and its ordering deadline is approaching fast. The set went on sale on June 7, 2012 and sales will halt on July 5, 2012 at 5 PM ET.

What makes the two-coin set special is the unique strikes within it. They are two of the five minted American Silver Eagles. Those within the set are proof Silver Eagles from the U.S. Mint facility in San Francisco, so they bear the "S" mint mark. One of them is a Reverse Proof, meaning the design is polished and mirror like while the background is frosted. (Read more about the 2012 American Silver Eagle Proof Set.)

The other three 2012 American Silver Eagles, which are sold separately, are the 2012 Bullion Silver Eagle, the 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle from West Point, and the uncirculated Silver Eagle that is estimated to appear later this year. The bullion entered the market on January 3 and sales of the West Point issue began on April 12.
