The gold coin and two other coin sets will launch this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar. (There are three anniversary Kennedy products that include a total of 7 unique coins with varying finishes from different U.S. Mint facilities.)

Struck in three-quarters of a troy ounce of .9999 fine, or 24-karat gold, the price for the 2014 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Gold Coin will largely be determined by the going rate of gold. Similar to other numismatic gold coins from the U.S. Mint, its price will be based on a London Fix weekly average gold price that is calculated once a week. Specifically, the average of London gold fixings from the previous Thursday AM to Wednesday AM will be used as the base, and then compared against a coin pricing grid, shown here:

If the 24k Kennedy half-dollar was issued today, its price would be $1,277.50 since the current average for gold falls within the $1,300 to $1,349.99 range. For every $50 price range change, the gold coin’s price would adjust lower or higher by $37.50.

About the 24K Kennedy Half Dollar

Produced at the United States Mint at West Point and carrying the "W" mint mark, obverses feature United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ original 1963 sculpt of Kennedy that debuted on 1964 Kennedy halves. The portrait has changed slightly over the years to include a reduction in its relief. All 50th anniversary Kennedy coins will bear the original design. In addition to its precious metal content, the gold coin is further distinguished from the six other anniversary halves by its dual date 1964-2014. The other coins will have only the 2014 year.

Reverses bear the standard heraldic eagle design with a shield on its breast, holding a symbolic olive branch and a bundle of 13 arrows. The image was designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Frank Gasparro and has been used on Kennedy half-dollars since the very beginning (1964).

Ordering and Limits

The 2014 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Gold Coin will be available beginning at noon ET on Aug. 5, 2014 from the United States Mint website at www.usmint.gov/catalog.
