Also included in the new law (111-86) is an option for the Secretary of the Treasury to continue issuing numismatic items containing the 2009 Cents until June 30, 2010. Without the amendment, all sales would have had to end on December 31, 2009.

Details about the ceremony, to be held in Washington D.C. on the U.S. Capitol grounds, are given along with the locations of the two additional penny exchanges being offered by the Mint.
Coin design is up next on the program. Numismatic News Editor Dave Harper interviews the newest member of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), Michael A. Olson. Olson is a bank president from Pella, Iowa and an active coin collector.
"I started collecting coins back in Waterloo, Iowa as a small boy with the Waterloo Coin Club," replied Olson when he was asked how long he has been a coin collector. "I remember saving my allowance every week. I believe those meetings were once a month and my dad would take me down to the meeting and whatever money I had I spent on coins."

No proof one ounce gold or silver American Eagle coins will be struck this year by the US Mint, Bob Van Ryzin relays during his "What’s In the News" segment on this week’s Coin Chat Radio.

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts as well as the Citizen’s Coinage Advisory Committee have both made their recommendations concerning their favorite designs for the five 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters due out next year from the US Mint, according to Bob Van Ryzin on this week’s Coin Chat Radio during his segment of "What’s In The News."
The five sites being honored next year: Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Yosemite National Park in California, Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. Both review boards had several designs to choose from for each location and also made recommendations as to design improvements that should be considered. The Treasury Secretary will make the final call on what designs will be used.

The United States Congress is considering new commemorative silver dollars to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Bob Van Ryzin reveals during his "What’s In the News" segment on this week’s Coin Chat Radio.
A suggested mintage of up to 2 million coins could be struck with a $10 surcharge added to the price of each that would be forwarded to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.
Also under consideration is a $5 gold piece and silver dollar for 2012 that would celebrate the 190th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key.
