Gold futures rose 0.2% on Thursday, Aug. 15

Precious metals futures ended mixed Thursday with gold and palladium higher and silver and platinum lower. Gold closed at a new, more than 6.3-year high.

Gold for December delivery rose $3.40, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,531.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement was the highest since April 11, 2013 when gold ended at $1,564.90 an ounce.

"Gold prices are modestly higher in midday U.S. trading Thursday, as global stock and financial markets are still on edge as the world’s two largest economies go head-to-head in a major trade war. Civil unrest in Hong Kong is adding to marketplace anxiety," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc., said in a daily note.

Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,518.30 to a high of $1,534.90. They gained 0.9% on Wednesday, lost 0.2% on Tuesday, and rose 0.6% on Monday.

Silver for September delivery declined 6.6 cents, or 0.4%, to close at $17.214 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $17.07 and $17.37. They surged 1.7% on Wednesday — ending at their best price since June 14, 2018, they shed 0.5% on Tuesday, and they gained 0.8% on Monday.
