Gold futures were little changed for a second straight session, rising slightly Tuesday after dipping in their start to the trading week on Monday.
Gold for August delivery edged up 50 cents, or 0.04%, to settle at $1,400.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The resurgence in U.S. dollar reaching a three-week high moved gold at lower prices earlier in the session, following which we are seeing a little bit of bargain buying which has kept the market afloat," Reuters quoted Alex Turro, market strategist at RJO Futures.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,387.50 to a high of $1,402.40. They lost a dime on Monday. Last Wednesday, gold finished at $1,420.90 an ounce for its best settlement since May 14, 2013.
Silver for September delivery added 9.7 cents, or 0.6%, to settle at $15.147 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $14.96 and $15.16. They gained 0.3% on Monday.
In other precious metals prices Tuesday:

October platinum declined $5.30, or 0.7%, to $815.10 an ounce, ranging from $809.20 to $820.40.
- Palladium for September delivery lost $18.30, or 1.2%, to $1,539.90 an ounce, trading between $1,532.50 and $1,556.30. Last Wednesday, palladium notched a record settlement at $1,565.80 an ounce.
London Precious Metals Prices
In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:
- Gold declined $8.55, or 0.6%, to $1,391.55 an ounce.
- Silver fell 4.5 cents, or 0.3%, to $15.025 an ounce.
