US Mint 2017 Silver Proof Set Released

Today, June 7, the United States Mint released an annual set designed for collectors. The 2017 Silver Proof Set made its debut at noon (ET).

2017 Silver Proof Set
Coins of the 2017 Silver Proof Set are encased in two different protective lenses — one for the Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters™, and one for the remaining strikes. They ship together in a single carton along with a U.S. Mint Certificate of Authenticity. The Washington Monument appears on the front of the carton with the back having photographic images of included coins and honored individuals and sites.

Available for $47.95, which is $5 less than last year’s issue, the set includes a total of ten coins representative of the circulating coinage of the nation. Each piece is struck at the U.S. Mint’s facility in San Francisco. Adding to its appeal, seven of the coins are produced from a composition of 90 percent silver and 10% copper.

Included Coins and Silver Weight of Proof Set

Found within the proof set are the following ten coins:

  • 2017-S Silver Effigy Mounds National Monument (Iowa) Quarter
  • 2017-S Silver Frederick Douglass National Historic Site (Washington, DC) Quarter
  • 2017-S Silver Ozark National Scenic Riverways (Missouri) Quarter
  • 2017-S Silver Ellis Island (New Jersey) Quarter
  • 2017-S Silver George Rogers Clark National Historical Park (Indiana) Quarter
  • 2017-S Native American $1 Coin
  • 2017-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Coin
  • 2017-S Silver Roosevelt Dime
  • 2017-S Jefferson Nickel
  • 2017-S Lincoln Cent

The seven silver coins add up to 1.338 troy ounces of the previous metal. That amounts to $23.55 in silver based on today’s LBMA silver price of $17.60 an ounce. The remaining three coins have standard circulating compositions.

For comparison, the 2016 Silver Proof Set had an approximate silver value of $21.64 based on the market conditions when it debuted on April 18, 2016. It recently sold out and has last reported sales of 369,860.

All ten coins from this year’s set are produced with a proof finish which features sharper reliefs, mirror-like backgrounds and frosted foregrounds. This finish is accomplished through the use of hand-polished coin blanks, polished dies and multiple press strikings.

These are silver editions released earlier in the separate U.S. Mint 2017 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™, which is available for $31.95. These same quarters are in the more encompassing 2017 Silver Proof Set.

Notably absent from this year’s set are Presidential $1 Coins. That is because the multi-year program, which debuted in 2007, ended in 2016. Last year’s set included proofs of the final dollars honoring Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.
