Frederick Douglass Quarters for D.C. in Three-Coin Set

Today, April 24, the United States Mint began selling three-coin sets of Frederick Douglass quarters for $9.95. The coins commemorate the national historic site in Washington, DC.

This latest America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Set™ is the second issue for 2017 and the thirty-seventh overall in the series that debuted in 2010.

Frederick Douglass quarters were released into circulation earlier in April, the same day that the U.S. Mint started selling rolls and bags of them in circulating quality. Quarters in this set are unlike those produced for circulation as they are minted to a higher quality, have collector finishes, and have lower mintages. The set includes:

• One uncirculated coin from the U.S. Mint facility in Denver with a ‘D’ mint mark
• One uncirculated coin from the U.S. Mint facility in Philadelphia with a ‘P’ mint mark
• One proof coin from the U.S. Mint facility in San Francisco with a ‘S’ mint mark

The mint mark on each quarter is located on its obverse (heads), on the right side of George Washington’s portrait, and under the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST.

All three quarters are together, within a protective plastic card that shows a scenic photo of Frederick Douglass’ home, which is also depicted on the quarters. The backside of the card includes a very brief bio about Mr. Douglass, a description of the quarters’ design, and a signed certificate of authenticity.

Many older three-coin sets remain available. Figures show their sales numbers range from about 10,390 to 24,800. This year’s first set featured quarters honoring Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa. Forthcoming sets for 2017 will feature quarters celebrating Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri, Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty National Monument) in New Jersey, and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana.
