Described by the Mint as "more affordable" at CAD $129.95, which is about US $96, the coin is minted to collector proof quality and struck in 99.99% pure gold to a weight of 1.27 grams.

"Your coin features an outstanding amount of lifelike detail on a smaller (13.92 mm) canvas," the Royal Canadian Mint promotes.

The silver maple leaf designs are depicted in a downward position as they would appear when attached to a branch.

"Where the veins are sunken on the first leaf, they are raised and prominent on the second, which is further enhanced by the matte and proof finishes that attractively contrast the two," the Mint describes.

The design is the work of Canadian artist Margaret Best. Surrounding the pair of leaves are inscriptions of 50 CENTS, 2017, CANADA, and MB for the artist’s initials.

Obverses carry the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with inscriptions of ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA.
