Precious Metals Little Changed; US Mint Bullion Sales Rise

Most precious metals futures recorded extremely modest losses Tuesday

Precious metals futures ended from flat to nearly unchanged in their start to the new trading week on Tuesday. U.S. markets closed Monday for Presidents Day.

Gold for April delivery dipped 20 cents, or less than 0.1%, to settle at $1,238.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Gold’s resilience is all the more impressive considering U.S. equities are setting record after record, while the dollar is also fairly strong," Reuters quoted INTL FCStone analyst Edward Meir.

Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,227.80 to a high of $1,240.20. Last week, they rose 0.3% for their third straight weekly gain. On Thursday, gold closed at its best price since Nov. 10.

Lower for a second session in a row after climbing for three straight, silver for March delivery shed 2.9 cents, or 0.2%, to $18.001 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $17.81 to $18.06. Last week, they rose 0.5% for their seventh consecutive weekly advance.

In other precious metals Tuesday:

  • April platinum was unchanged at $1,006 an ounce, trading between $990.50 and $1,008.80.

  • Palladium for March delivery edged down 40 cents, or less than 0.1%, to $778.80 an ounce, ranging from $763.10 to $780.30.

London Precious Metals Prices

In comparing earlier fixed London bullion prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:

  • Gold fell $4.10, or 0.3%, to $1,233.20 an ounce.
  • Silver declined 9 cents, or 0.5, to $17.89 an ounce.

LBMA platinum and palladium prices are available on the LBMA’s website with a delay of midnight.

US Mint Bullion Coin Sales in 2017
