US Mint Sales: 2016 NPS Gold Commemorative Coin Hits Mintage Low

24

Two commemorative United States Mint products launched last week, the 2017 Lions Clubs International Centennial Silver Dollars in proof and uncirculated qualities.

2016-W Uncirculated National Park Service $5 Gold Commemorative Coin
CoinNews photo of a 2016-W Uncirculated National Park Service $5 Gold Commemorative Coin. It now has the lowest reported sales of any modern commemorative coin.

But having already talked about them aplenty for now (read about their first-day sales or look at Lions Clubs dollar photos), we’ll jump straight to the topic that headlines this article.

Mintage Low: 2016-W Uncirculated NPS Gold Commemorative Coin

Four weeks ago, the U.S. Mint stopped selling all 2016-dated commemorative coins. And with that, the 2016-D Uncirculated National Park Service 50c Commemorative Coin and the 2016-W Proof Mark Twain $5 Gold Commemorative Coin each marked mintage lows for their type.

Since then, the 2016-W Uncirculated National Park Service $5 Gold Commemorative Coin joined the club. With three straight weeks of downward adjustments, its latest sales total is now 5,164 coins. That’s the lowest for a modern commemorative, displacing the 1997-W Uncirculated Jackie Robinson Gold Coin with its mintage of 5,174. The Jackie Robinson coin has enjoyed strong secondary market prices during its reign atop the list of "most scarce" commemorative coins.

I picked up the NPS uncirculated hoping for low numbers on the coin. When seeing the final mintage posted a couple weeks ago, I was a little disappointed but still happy as it was not the lowest but very close. Today’s news was great, I don’t know how it will do in the long run as I am not a flipper but the very few I see on the big auction site are now going for $575 to $650 ungraded.

Jp

JB- I did the very same thing… It’s nice to know that hopefully in the long run this gold coin will be a great investment. I actually like the coin, although I know most people on this site did not.
When you look at this coin under an 8x loop , it’s really quite exceptional looking.
I’m glad I picked up a few extra.

chuck

Seth Riesling,
I’ve always thought that the “First Spouse” gold coins should be/ should have been considered “commemorative” coins. Do you know why they were not so designated and/or accepted as such?
Thanks

Dwight

On ebay a NGC graded perfect MS70 2016-W National Park Service Uncirculated $5 Gold half eagle sold for $625 as item #182376900714 on December 9, 2016 @ 06:35 AM.

David Schwager

Chuck, good question. The Commemorative Coin Act of 1996 regulates commemorative coins. Among other rules, it specifies that commem programs last only one year. Multi-year issues like First Spouse don’t fit the rules of the Act, so they can’t be commemoratives.

Jan Fox

Why are sales of 2016 W ASE UNC SO LOW? IS A ONE YEAR ONLY ISSUE … WONDER IF IT WILL GO OFF SALE SOON?

jim

It is my opinion that all coins minted in a particular year (with that date) should be sold only in that year and no longer made available by the US Mint making the unpopular coins guaranteed rare coins.

Jim

2016 National park service $5 gold unc price should pass $1,000.00 a piece mark. While the uncirculated half dollar, 20,016 mintage, also the lowest, will hit $100 a piece.

chuck

David Schwager,
Thank you for your information. Did not know about the multi- year rule. Ignorance is bliss.
Guess they did not want to consider a specific First Lady worthy of a commemorative and yet made Paul one of the series and of course the old design of the period for three others when there was no spouse living. Just a guess but they will likely, no doubt, issue a “real” commemorative in the future for the other First Spouse who did not qualify at this time.

Seth Riesling

chuck – Sorry I didn’t answer your question in a timely manner, as my computer was acting up yesterday. David Schwager answered the question in a great concise way. As background, the 1990s saw too many commemorative coin programs in some years & collectors were getting upset with that situation, so Congress passed the law that states we can only have 2 commemorative coin programs at the most each year & the coins have to be sold in the calendar year in which they are issued. In 1994 there were 6 different commemorative coin programs! (That fact prompted the 1996… Read more »

jim

Seth, Chuck –
I bought the Alice Paul specifically because it was a surreptitious sneaking in a commemorative coin when 2 were already allocated for that year. FYI, Alice Paul was only 3 months old when Chester A Arthur (her assigned spouse) finished his term in office.

joera

Reports like this sometimes makes me wish I could kick myself. But then again it turns out to be great news if I have the coin. But if I could buy every coin the mint ever made then it wouldn’t be as interesting and fun. Not knowing is fun and frustrating at the same time. If I over thought every coin and purchase it would not be fun at all.

chuck

Seth Riesling,
Thank you for your reply.

Tinto

Just saw the latest figure on the NPS $5 unc sales on another blog ..it went down by 4 more coins … to 5,160 …

Dwight

The most recent U.S. Mint sales figures as of January 29, 2017 reveal that the lowest mintage modern commemorative gold coin is the 2016-W National Park Service Gold Uncirculated $5 coin with a mintage of only 5,160.
The second lowest mintage modern commemorative gold coin is the 1997-W Jackie Robinson uncirculated gold $5 coin with a mintage of 5,174.
The 2016-D National Park Service Uncirculated clad half dollar @ 21,028 is the lowest mintage coin of its type.

Brian

Any idea why the $5 uncirculated gold coin seems to have a higher value than the $5 proof coin? I have the NPS $5 proof in PF70…it is more rare, but doesn’t seem to be fetching as high a price. I love the NPS commemoratives (I have the other two in PF70 as well), so I won’t be selling, but just wanted to know.

jim

Brian –
The uncirculated coins are never in as great demand as their proof counterparts because they aren’t as pretty as the proofs are. So the mintage is not as high as the proofs and therefore they are rarer than the proofs.
Personally I don’t understand why they don’t just drop the uncirculated finish. The difference in cost is almost negligible (for example the Lions Club proof and uncirculated differ by only $1) and the finish for the uncirculated $1 is flat, plain, and relatively uninteresting.

Seth Riesling

jim –

I did the same thing on the Alice Paul $10 gold coin & bought both the Proof & Unc. versions just because the law creating the Presidential $1 coins & First Spouse coins required a non-first spouse to be honored! When I read the legislation way back then I was taken aback a little, but it is a fascinating & historic coin (& I don’t care if it goes up, down or sideways in value – it is a keeper!)

-NumisDudeTX

jim

Seth –
Yeah, I could only afford one, should have gone for the unc looking at the Jackie Robinson pricing. But the spouse coins are so out of favor I doubt even its uniqueness will raise the price of either proof or unc versions beyond the gold price fluctuations. But I’m keeping mine too, you never can tell what’s going to happen in the future…

Tinto

@Brian
“Any idea why the $5 uncirculated gold coin seems to have a higher value than the $5 proof coin? I have the NPS $5 proof in PF70…it is more rare, but doesn’t seem to be fetching as high a price….”

The proof was also made as part of a 3 coin set which had 14,589 in sales, so you need to add that figure to the sales figure of the one coin proof..

Chas Barber

Excellent! I got some @ $388 price, also the Mark Twain $5 BU is pretty low #s as well. Not sure if it will have the legs of Jackie’s —> and the design is funky, but it grew on me, neat in person!
