Gold Mercury dimes will be available again on Dec. 15

The United States Mint will resume sales of the nearly 9,000 unsold 2016-W Mercury Dime Centennial Gold Coins beginning at noon ET on Thursday, Dec. 15.

There’s going to be another race to get a chance at buying one. Gold Mercury dimes launched on April 21 for $205 apiece. They lasted about 40 minutes before going off sale, with the U.S. Mint saying they needed to reconcile orders and cancellations before they could return.

The most recent figures place the dime’s sales at 116,096 coins for 92.9% of the 125,000 possible. The remaining about 8,900 coins will go for $200 each. (See photos of the centennial coin.)

The centennial Mercury dime is one of three .9999 fine gold coins issued this year to celebrate the 1916 renaissance in American coinage. Standing Liberty and Walking Liberty Centennial Gold Coins were also introduced. Symbolic of their face values, the dime, quarter and half-dollar have corresponding weights of 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/2 oz. troy ounces.

Both higher-denominated coins have remained available since their release. The gold quarter is $447.50 with 84,048 sold for 84% of the allotted 100,000 and the gold half-dollar is $840 with sales of 57,008 for 81.4% of the possible 70,000. Last week, the half-dollar logged a sharp sales increase of more than 8,000 coins.

Ordering options and more information about coins is available from the U.S. Mint’s online store, found here. The dime will have a 1 coin per household order limit when sales resume. There are no per household buying limits for the quarter or half-dollar

I received a press release email from the Mint at 8:02am this morning & a “remind me” email notification at 9:02am for this gold Winged Liberty Head dime offering. I am glad those of you who didn’t get one on issue day will have the chance now to get one at $5 less than issue price on first day 8 months ago. Good luck everyone!

I’m just wondering if anybody considered the uncirculated dollar set this year is probably going to be the only set the mint puts out with all five coins edge lettered? Just a thought.

jim
Guest
jim

This set is just a scam by the US Mint to sell coins already available elsewhere. The fact that all coins are edge lettered this year is not significant.

jim
Guest

Once again the US Mint is giving practically no notice of a coin sale before it happens. At least they did send an email to their customer list.

And $10 off expedited shipping for 8 days? For coins that have been available for even months? Who waits until the last minute to order coins?

The problem I have with all three of these coins is that the quality Mint of them is just standard circulation issue at a proof type premium.

Who was the knucklehead that determined the inferior mint stamp for a 100 year celebration?

We’re just lost in the woods! Drain the swamp!

Does anyone recall when sales were put on hold for these? I thought it was the first day but do not recall. Thanks

You have it right. It was on the first day of issue on April 21 that the Mint thought, in error, they had sold all the gold dimes. It has taken nearly 8 months for the bonehead Jeppson to decide to offer the nearly 9,000 gold dimes that were not sold on issue day.

CoinNews readers: FYI –

The Mint has confirmed to the numismatic press that it will be offering gold dimes received by customers & returned for whatever reason. Buyer Beware!

Seth: Thanks. I was wondering about customer returns. Good point there. This could be a spark for the quarter and half. I hope those that wanted this are ready to go at noon. Perfect timing for fine Chistmas gift. As much as I would like to pull the trigger on this, I am going to watch from the sideline and see how long it takes to sell out.

It’s depressing that the United States Mint did not decide to issue a 3 coin gold centennial set and, a 30th anniversary silver eagle set. God only knows what they will do (or don’t do) in 2017…2018…2019, etc.

how about those remaining 95Ws can we have a shot at those coins. as a collector I rather they didn’t offer this coin again. no limit they will be on TV the next day. with some kind of crazy really limited new label. could be a buying opportunity for the flippers.

All I want for Christmas is a working website at the Mint and people who know how to run it right and keep it running right. Merry Christmas everyone.

One dime per person is the right thing to do. I can’t believe that they still have quarters and halves left.
Does anybody know what coins and or sets actually sold out this year? Bet you it wasn’t many. I think it’s a foregone conclusion the Dimes will sell out in less than 30 minutes.

You are so right! It is surprising that the 3 most anticipated coins the Mint made this year – the 2016 Centennial gold dimes, gold quarters & golf half dollars have NOT sold out yet! Amazing. Who would have thought it?
Happy Holidays Danny!

Seth,
I know, you would have thought they all would have sold out the first time around. I bought the 50th anniversary gold Kruegerrand (sold out at the mint) and will be getting the 3 different silver Kruegerrands when they come out in January or February and then chill out unless something pops up. Merry Christmas!

You got it so right on dude! Who programs the US Mint website – high school dropouts who can’t type or code correctly!? Sad & embarrassing situation for sure for the largest Mint in the world.

time to redesign the ASE… they’ve pretty well milked every possible option for this issue…it’s getting old…can’t the Mint give collectors something new & exciting?
Maybe a “31st Anniversary” issue…. (Ha!)

Seth,
You are in the know about the Mint. I commented earlier. What products from the Mint, sold out so fat this year? I know alot of other coins from various Mints sold out. I just received the second ever Proof and Reverse Proof Litiberdad set. Along with the first, they are beautiful. Happy Holidays.

Do any of you know if it’s possible to order another Mercury Dime from a different US Mint account to the same address with the same payment method to get around the Household Order Limit? I’d really like to have two of these, not just one! …but of course, I don’t want to order the second one from a sketchy ebayer for more than $250!
Thanks!

Warren, Won’t happen. If you have friends or relatives nearby that you trust you might be able to use the same credit card. But, as to the same place, payment and name, won’t work. I’ve tried it, no go. But My sister using her married name and brother both using my credit card wit me ordering from my apartment and a good friend have gotten me extras from time to time. Like 4 2015 Proof Platinum Eagles last year. I got my 20 dimes first time around so I didn’t go for 80. Good luck and Marry Christmas. DrWho7 Mint says one per household, not sure about multiple orders on same credit card to different People and addresses. How do you think the big boys get so many? I said before earlier this year, they give their employees incentives and use family members and friends to get all they can… Read more »

Nels,
Thank you for your reply about the receipt from the mint.
I did not get mine until about 12:34EST.
After I placed my order at check out I did not sign out but went looking at other things. I then thought about not having signed out and not having a confirmation email. I assumed that I should be ok since I had checked out but with no email I thought I would go sign out and see what happened. I signed on soon after noon and had a little delay but had my order in and checked out by about 12:05EST. But as time passed I thought I would ask if people were getting the emails from the mint.
Thanks, bilelle

Danny Morano, a Camel once in a great while. Still not sold out at 1:53… I’m shocked that they are still dimes for sale! I thought they would be gone in less then a half hour. Its to bad about the Anerican Libertys that they finally put down as sold out so I guess they get melted down that I didn’t get a chance to buy…

It’s amazing that the mint doesn’t use its customer email list to send out notifications like this. Maybe they don’t so their web site won;t be overloaded.

And here with just 2 1/2 weeks to go till the new year and still no evidence that there will be a product schedule for 2017. I guess there’s no reason for one since they were waiting until the last minute to update the TBDs in the 2016 schedule. I’m not seeing the point of putting out a schedule with TBDs in it. It’s not like they don’t know when coins will be available; they just seem to be afraid to tell the public.

The Mint’s website product schedule area has a toggle button where the year is listed as 2015 & if you press on it, it brings up 2015, 2016 & 2017 schedules. The 2017 section only has products available in the month of January so far.

I was going to pass on other these customer’s returns before I was excluded from the Mercury 10c offer today.

For me,

3 for 3 Mercs were keepers

2 of 5 SLQ were keepers

Just 1 of 3 Walkers survived the cut.

I used a 7x loop on these and easily rejected 5 of 9.

My keeper rate for the 3 designs in 24k is 6 of 11. All ordered direct from the USMINT. Two Insured USMAIL returns were costly

Got one, was logged in and ready to go just after noon Eastern. Received a confirmation letter followed by a “problem” message. I called the mint in the early afternoon but the phone stayed busy. Got through (3 minutes waiting) later in the day; apparently my credit card number got messed up. The lady said they sold out in 80 minutes but were holding mine in case I called within 48 hours. We straightened out the card and the order was accepted. Now that is good customer service!

Seth –
Thanks. The 2017 schedule must have been posted right after I looked for it. And still they’re afraid to publish a full year schedule. They know when they will offer the Boy’s Town commemoratives for example and yet not on the list. Maybe they got burned with all the TBDs last year so instead they’re not going to say anything. How childish and unresponsive to customer needs.

these coins don’t sell because there to expensive for average collectors. my local coin shop buys more gold than he sells. he does sell these coins but they do sit on the shelf for awhile. I flipped the gold dimes and quarters on ebay and kept one gold half and added it to my silver eagle collection. we meet on Wednesday nights and buy sell and trade. there are some very impressive collections in our group. I myself have been putting a graded 70 Kennedy set together that I don’t no if I will ever complete?. we actually discussed these coins and in our opinion. we all have one. most of us didn’t feel they had a long term upside to them. right or wrong we look at everything financially. there are some exceptions . with the help of our group I added a proof 69 accent hair to my… Read more »

These coins don’t sell out because most people cant afford them.
I buy what I am allowed from the mint and don’t open them. if they turn into the next best item I should have bought when I could. I got them.
I get my graded coins on secondary market were I get the 70s I want .
I got two dimes from my local coin shop for $245 each. when I went back to get a couple quarters the other dimes he had were still there and 10 bucks cheaper than what I paid.
the average collector cant afford them or doesn’t want them?.
he didn’t buy any walking liberty’s to sell in the store.

I’m glad I got this gold dime when they first came out. It looks great. I think it would grade 70 if I were to send it in to get graded. Some of the customers going for the dimes on sale now may not be so lucky. They can get an unsold dime or a returned dime. I was thinking about getting another one this time around but I don’t want to take a chance and get a returned reject.
Good luck to you all.

defiantly a possibility you get one with fingerprints on it. you should be able to get $225 for your unopened one?. graded 70s are available for under $250. its a good flip for a guaranteed 70..
