In celebration of the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, the Bureau of Engraving (BEP) unveiled its latest Lucky Money product during a media event today, Nov. 15, at its Eastern Currency Facility in Washington, DC.

Dubbed the "Year of the Rooster 2017," the product features an uncirculated $1 Federal Reserve note with a serial number beginning with "8888."

"The Lucky Money product, Year of the Rooster 2017, is exquisitely designed with decorative Chinese symbolism and is packaged in a symbolic, red folder with embossed, gold foil," the BEP describes.

The rooster is one of 12 zodiac signs associated with the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Year of the Rooster 2017 represents good fortune and prosperity, signifying success in the New Year.

Ordering and Limits

The product’s first day of sale is Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 8:00 a.m. (ET). For more information, visit the Lucky Money Collection section of the BEP’s website at:

It and other currency products may also be ordered by telephone at 1(800) 456-3408; by fax (888) 891-7585 [International fax (202) 874-1788]; and in the Washington, DC and Fort Worth, Texas Visitor Center Gift Shops.

Pricing is $5.95 per $1 note with 88,888 available. Bulk pricing is available. Fifty to 999 notes are $4.50 each and 1,000 or more notes cost $3.95 each. There is a household ordering limit of 250 notes until Nov. 23, 2016.

The introduction of the Year of the Rooster 2017 is the fourth issue from BEP’s second generation of the Lucky Money Lunar Calendar product line.

Related Lucky Money Products

The BEP continues to offer a number of earlier issued Lucky Money products. They include sheets of uncirculated $2 notes with serial numbers staring with "8888," and three different $1 note products with:

  • the ‘$1 Fortune Note’ having a beginning serial number of "8888,"
  • the ‘$1 168 Prosperity Forever Note’ bearing a starting serial number of "168," and
  • the ‘$1 Lucky 777 Note’ featuring serial numbers beginning with no less than three number 7s in a row.

The 8-note sheet of $2 FRNs with “8888” beginning serial numbers was issued a year ago on Nov. 18, 2015 (not a new product) & is still available at $58.88 from the BEP.
I got one last year & framed it & it is beautiful & is very large as it ships flat & not rolled up like the larger full uncut sheets.
