Today, Aug. 9, the United States Mint started taking orders for sets of circulating quality dollars featuring former Presidents Ronald Reagan, Gerald R. Ford and Richard M. Nixon. This is the U.S. Mint’s last set with circulating $1 coins wholly dedicated to United States presidents.

Buying options include a set of dollars from the Denver Mint with ‘D’ mint marks and a set of dollars from the Philadelphia Mint with ‘P’ mint marks. These dollars depict the three commander-in-chiefs with surrounding portrait inscriptions of:

  • RICHARD M. NIXON, IN GOD WE TRUST, 37th PRESIDENT and 1969-1974. Designed and sculpted by Don Everhart.

  • GERALD R. FORD, IN GOD WE TRUST, 38th PRESIDENT and 1974-1977. Designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

  • RONALD REAGAN, IN GOD WE TRUST, 40th PRESIDENT and 1981-1989. Designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Joseph Menna.

This year marks an end to the series of Presidential $1 Coins. They kicked off in 2007, although sets of circulation editions debuted just four years ago. The U.S. Mint in late 2011 was ordered by the Treasury Secretary to stop producing dollars for circulation, which means new ones are not in change or available from banks. To support collectors, the sets were introduced in 2012.

Advantages of Sets

A handy aspect of these products is their packaging. Designed with coin collectors in mind, the dollars may be removed easily for placement into albums or other numismatic displays.

Another advantage is their convenience. Buying both sets is good way to get 2015 P&D Presidential $1 Coins without having to make separate purchases in larger quantities and at higher prices. The U.S. Mint sells the same dollars from each facility in 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags and 250-coin boxes but their prices range from $32.95 to $111.95. Each three-coin set is $11.95.
