US Mint Sales: 2016 Commemorative Coins Bounce

2016-W $5 Proof Mark Twain Commemorative Gold Coin in Capsule, Obverse

Weekly sales of U.S. Mint commemorative coins logged stronger weekly grown, including 2016 Mark Twain gold and silver products

United States Mint coins scored their best round of week-over-week gains in 2-1/2 months. More than half of the Mint’s numismatic products logged stronger sales, led by commemorative coins, gold coins and annual sets.

Coins commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service and Mark Twain’s life and legacy advanced by a combined 3,222, up 17.9% from the previous week’s total of 2,733 coins. All the silver and gold editions improved, though weekly gains of the 50c clad versions dropped from the prior period by more than half.

Six of the seven American Eagle and Buffalo gold products saw healthier gains, with the 2016-W $50 Proof Gold Eagle the lone standout.

Five products increased by more than 1,000 units compared to seven previously.

Also, 3 products had their sales total reduced compared to 2 previously. Again, and for a fourth straight week, the most notable one was the 2016-W Proof American Platinum Eagle. The four weekly declines include amounts of 192; 166; 165; and now 10. Its new total is 9,277 of the originally allotted 10,000 coins.

THANKS MIKE!!
It is a lot easier to get this information here than anywhere else! That is for sure!

Seth Riesling August 5, 2016 at 5:02 pm

FYI CoinNews readers –

coinworld.com on their website has posted a video of their recent visit to the West Point Mint showing the striking of the new 2016-W SL gold quarter coins. They also published photos of the new 2016-W high relief American Liberty silver medals from their visit to West Point Mint.

Why are folks returning the gold merc dime?

Seth Riesling August 5, 2016 at 9:51 pm

Joe C. –

The return period of course is only 7 days from delivery. The Mint has a very slow accounting process for canceled orders, credit card declines & returns. The Mint usually takes 2 years to provide final official audited figures! They are accounting dinosaurs at the US Mint.
The values on the gold dimes have dropped greatly in the secondary market since so many graded out at SP-70. The Mint did a great job producing them, but a horrible job selling them with about 9,000 unsold & no plan yet almost 4 months later to sell the rest. They are impotent when it comes to making decisions. Meanwhile a lot of 24K gold sits in the Mint’s fulfillment warehouse in Memphis, Tennessee gathering dust! Typical government bureaucracy. There has not been a US Mint Director since 2011 & President Obama will likely go down in history without having his own appointed Mint director due to inaction by the US Congress. Jeppson is still waiting for a floor vote in the Senate & I hope he doesn’t get it. Let Her Majesty Queen Hillary pick the next Mint director!

A little off-topic here, but I noticed that the upcoming “2016 Presidential Coin Set” have different production numbers.

The “D” coins are limited to 15,000 and the “P” coins limited to 17,000.

Christopher Williams August 7, 2016 at 7:15 pm

I read the product description over again and the “Mintage Limit” is none, but the “Product Limit” is 15,000 and 17,000.

Seth Riesling August 7, 2016 at 8:39 pm

Christopher Williams –

Not sure if you have ordered these sets before, but they are just regular circulating quality strikes (not special Mint set strikes) that the Mint sells for collectors to put in their US Mint album or private company album. They are low quality with scratches in my experience & they used to be $9.95 till they raised the price about 3 years ago. Not sure why the set limit is different for “P” versus “D” They usually just make as many as they have received orders from the previous year, but mintage is unlimited on these coins.

Happy collecting!
