The 2016 24k Gold Standing Liberty Quarter will feature sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil’s original bare-breasted obverse and eagle reverse

The 2016-W Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Coin will launch on Sept. 8 and the 2016-W Proof American Silver Eagle will go on sale Sept. 16, the United States Mint announced on Monday.

The gold piece commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Standing Liberty quarter, which is composed of .900 fine silver and was minted for circulation from 1916 to 1930. The centennial edition is in .9999 fine gold and shares the original quarter designs to include the bare-breasted obverse. The coin’s obverse changed after 1916 with chain mail added to cover Liberty’s chest. The gold coin has added obverse inscriptions of ‘AU 24K 1/4 OZ’.

Major details for the collectible are yet to be unvealed, such as its mintage and household ordering limits. As for what it will cost, U.S. Mint policy is to set prices of collector gold coins based on a weekly average of London gold. It released a pricing schedule earlier this year that shows the coin would be $485 today based on gold’s average of between $1,300.00 and $1,349.99 an ounce. If the precious metal maintains its current momentum above $1,350 an ounce, it would be $497.50.

The gold Standing Liberty quarter is the second of three coins the U.S. Mint will release this year to celebrate popular designs introduced 100 year ago. A centennial gold Mercury dime launched on April 21 and went off-sale within an hour. A gold Walking Liberty half-dollar will end the special series.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the first issue, collector editions of this year’s American Silver Eagles will feature a smooth edge with lettering denoting the anniversary. The one-year-only edge change is required under the FAST Act, which President Obama signed into law on Dec. 4.

Mintages, possible ordering limits and pricing remain unknown. Last year’s proof Silver Eagle went on sale Jan. 2 for $48.95 when silver was at $15.71 an ounce. The precious metal is now trading at a two-year high near $20.60 an ounce.

The uncirculated 2016 Silver Eagle will also have a smooth edge with the same lettering. Release information is not yet available for it.

U.S. Mint collector products launch at noon (ET) on the day of their release. CoinNews will talk more about the products before they go on sale.

Mike Unser –

I got this same email from the Mint yesterday morning, but they hadn’t updated their website with the new info.

Your article title & in one paragraph says “Standard” instead of “Standing” for the quarter name.

Seth
Were you lucky enough to get any of the dimes an if so ,how do you feel about the standing liberty, if they keep the mintage down it could turn into a nice three coin set, unless the mint is holding back at the end for a three coin set ?

Dustyroads

I have noticed that the Mint updates the schedule every other Wednesday evening. So, tomorrow evening we should see an update.
By the way, some of you should have already noticed the update request from the Mint for a stronger password. It’s been suggested by some that it may be wise to request new credit card numbers from your bank just in case the Mint may have been the target of of security breach. Better to be on the safe side.

Whistler

It will be reel purty to see how the Mint braintrusts screws this one up~ you know it will happen, how, a crash? A phantom sellout, Illogical HH limits, etc. leave it to them…..AS TO THE MINT GETTING HACKED, I would rather missout on some coin, then give the mint permission to keep my ID info & CC on file, heck they hack the Feds, the Dems, Hillary, everyone, the Mint is not immune, & even if they were, they likely sell your name to Littleton & others on the sly…..be wary

@Dustyroads

By seemingly having a set date and time to update their Website regardless of changes in between like the SLQ and ASE’s just shows how out of touch the Mint is with the collector public. But then their purpose seems to be to cater to the AP’s and the big boy buyers who probably got this info a long time ago. JMO So glad I decided to say bye bye to most of my purchasing from the Mint …

I expect a sellout of the SL gold quarter coin at whatever the mintage is due to the great interest in this centennial 3-coin program & with flippers & dealers just waiting to get them graded & put them on tv coin shows at ridiculously high prices like they did on the gold dime. The gold dimes graded out very high with lots of SP-70s. I got 3 of the gold dimes that look like they would grade 70. Very high quality on these overall.

I haven’t yet decided if I will purchase the other two dimes.

Guess I’ll wait on more info.

I’m going to try and get one but I’m not counting on it. That way I will not be so upset if it all goes to hell which I am counting on because it has happened too many times. I mean I have gotten some of the coins I wanted but there have been times I have not. If, or when, I miss out on this one I’ll be getting a graded one. That is when all the hoopla goes down and the prices will make since. Like the prices on the Mercury have gone down. You have to wait… Read more »

16XC and 16EA are now out of TBD and listed on the schedule.
The only thing that will keep the big boys and flippers with weak hands from driving down long term value of these SLQ’s will be either a low mintage (<60,000) or mint to demand. Either way, love them in OGP and that is where they will stay.

Dustyroads

Tinto, The Mint does keep us guessing.
But you have to give them credit for releasing the gold in an up market.
Or at least I can guess that the market will probably be between 1,350. and 1,399.
when the SLQ’s go up for sale.

Dustyroads

Dare I say $1,400. to $1,449.>?

charles

Seth
Any feel or idea on what kind of mintage to expect, I have a feeling with Gold being up and if it stays on its run there will be a low mintage, just a gut feeling, what you think ?

Tinto

@Dustyroads

You might be right, but given the Mint’s “performance” and track record over the years, IMO they just plain lucked out with the price of gold rising during the SLQ release.
.
It would be interesting to see the actual decision making processes at the Mint on this and other special releases (WHL, Liberty Silver Medal, proof/unc ASE, etc) but it ain’t gonna happen .. unless the GAO comes knocking on their door …

FLSharkvictim

I was one of the lucky ones that were able to grab two gold dimes that are absolutely stunning looking.. The bad news is they graded out at SP69 both coins instead of 70’s as I was hoping but no complaints here b/c at least I was able to buy two of them from the mint. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these 2016 24k Gold Standing Liberty Quarters and grab one of the Walking Liberty half’s to end the 3 coin series… This set should be worth a couple of bucks in a few years… Read more »

@Dustyroads

This just came to mind, it is also possible that the Mint wanted to avoid all the questions at the upcoming ANA show about the big releases still on “TBD” and they had to throw something out before then. JMO

The Mint has displayed one of the gold SL quarters at a few coin shows since May when photos of it were first published. Very beautiful like the gold dime. Whatever the mintage is, it will sell out quickly I think with collectors, dealers, flippers & investors going for the 3-coin gold centennial coins program.

-NumisDudeTX

Dustyroads

FLSharkvictim,

I can only wonder where you came up with that name. Hope you’re still in one piece.
As for medal mintages, it’s an open door for the Mint to do whatever they want.
Best to just buy for the design here.

Danny Morano

Seth and everyone else. The selling out of the gold quarter, Gold 50 cent piece and the proof silver Eagles is I forgone conclusion. They all will sell out. It’s just a matter of how many minted, how many collectors will be allowed to buy and how much each will cost. One more, how long it will take each to sell out. Proof Silver Eagles will take the longest because their Silver, cheaper and more will be made. Good luck and Happy Collecting. I’m just wondering if their will be any “surprises” at the 11th hour worth collecting. A 5oz.… Read more »

Mike Unser & CoinNews readers FYI –

coinworld.com has just posted a video of their visit to the West Point Mint showing the striking of the new gold SL quarter coins. They also posted the photos of the 2016-W high relief American Liberty silver Proof medals they saw while at the West Point Mint back in June.

-NumisDudeTX

FLSharkvictim

FYI, on the 2016 24-karat gold 100th anniversary coins could reach between 145,000 and 225,000 units combined…. So it should be a decent low mintage for the walking Liberty 1/4oz coin.

Kahoola

Can’t seem to find the mint mark. The silver SL’s have them next to the bottom star to the left of the date. There is no “W” there in the pic…

Seth Riesling

Kahoola –

The photo in this article is a mock-up from the Mint without a Mint Mark. To see the actual coin photo you can go to coinworld. com article dated 5-6 or 8-1 to see the actual SL gold quarter coin photo taken by Coin World at the West Point Mint. The Mint mark “W” is where it should be as you described.

Are there order limits on American Silver Eagle silver proof coins?
